While the lady kept asking questions mama was getting tired of it. She was about to dump a scoop of rice on top of the painter's head if she didn't stop yapping. This is important to the plot because it reveal the traits of mama and the painter lady. Mama can be hot-headed and the painter can be very annoying and picky. The dialogue doesn't really reveal anything other than that the painter lady is from the north and has a very strict diet. The dialogue does move the plot a long by giving the kids and mama a chance to not like the painter lady. They find her annoying, rude, and weird. The readers can infer that Miss Brown will probably die at the end of the short story, because of the way the old lady acted and because of the state Miss Brown was in.
