After growing up in Annandale, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C., he studied history and anthropology at Emory University and wrote for the university newspaper. Self-proclaimed tramp McCandless traversed the west. His death divided opinion, with some seeing him as an idealist like David Thoreau and Leo Tolstoy and others calling him self-destructive.

Module #3: Does human evolution/ history require risky behavior, outsiders, deviants? Can humans ever expect to feel belonging and freedom or do we all secretly want to run?

I believe that all aspects of history are necessary, and history becomes contentious when individuals deviate from societal expectations or standards, resulting in either positive or bad consequences. In the contemporary global context, I assume the role of a critic. I believe that any actions that might bring about genuine positive change or foster development are overly limited or controlled. For instance, if I intend to establish a company, I must complete a series of documentation to demonstrate my financial capacity to sustain it, including the initial tax payment. It hinders individuals from attaining their aspirations. Considering that, being a deviant is undeniably more convenient. The absence of deviants would render the system immune to scrutiny. Conformity does not contribute any valuable outcomes.

I believe that we all possess an underlying desire to engage in running. Not necessarily immersed in the wilderness, as shown by Chris McCandles, but rather seeking a new beginning, a purposeful existence, and a sense of meaning. Individuals possess their own perspectives on political authority, therefore rendering it challenging to attribute the inclination to flee entirely to this factor.

With limited preparation and survival abilities, McCandless started his expedition into the Alaskan wilderness. Chris had a lacked vital survival gear, including a map and appropriate attire, which are crucial for navigating through difficult environments. The absence of adequate preparation heightened the probability of facing challenges and jeopardized his life from the beginning. McCandless's idealized perception of nature, as depicted in his personal journals and the book "Into the Wild," which implied a limited comprehension of the challenging actualities inherent in the Alaskan wilderness. Christopher always seemed to underestimate the problems of living in a very tough environment, including the fact that food was hard to come by and the weather was miserable. For example, his initial choice of footwear, which wisely, was later upgraded into proper snow boots gifted from a friend he met along the way. McCandless's choice to embark on a solitary journey into the wilderness, devoid of any prior notification on his intentions or the provision of a trail for potential rescuers to trace, may be perceived as exhibiting recklessness and irresponsibility. He exposed himself to a precarious situation without any kind of aid or communication, so heightening the probability of harm. McCandless's defiance of established society conventions and material goods, although indicative of a need for genuineness and autonomy, may also be seen as naivety and impracticality. The individual's contempt for authority and preference for idealism over reality maybe had a role in his deficiency in preparedness and foresight. McCandless's sad death from hunger in the Alaskan desert is a powerful reminder of the bad things that happened because of his flawed approach. Even though he may have meant well, what he did caused unnecessary pain and loss, which shows how important it is to be well-prepared and respect the environment.

In my perception of both book and movie, McCandless can be judged in many ways and has indeed left many lessons for the generations that came after his passage. His rejection of the capitalist mindset and world and pursuit of individual liberty resonate with those who are critiques of the modern ages. McCandless' journey to self suffice raises ethical and philosophical questions about the balance of human liberty and accountability, the need for personal fulfillment vs societal standards, and the importance of success and contentment. He prompts reflection on the complexities of human conduct and the quest of sincerity in a culture dominated by commerce and obedience to cultural standards.

Nonetheless, his actions have sparked controversy and discussion, with critiques raising questions about the wisdom and ethical consequences of his decisions and dogmas. McCandless is commonly seen as a symbol of youthful idealism and the search for importance and authenticity. The individual's decision to forego typical conveniences of modern society and embark on an autonomous trip into the woods represents an idealized pursuit of self-exploration and transcendence.

McCandless's early death, as mentioned previously in the Padlet, also serves as a warning on the need of preparedness, security, and respect for the natural environment. The individual's lack of survival skills and inadequate preparation for the challenges of the Alaskan wilderness highlight the dangers of reckless exploration and the consequences of inordinate pride.

Cole song named Be Free (Live on The Late Night Show with David Letterman). In his song he highlights police brutality and institutional racism in the United States. The song was published in 2014 in response to the shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer (outside research: The Black Arts Movement - click to view).

What do Chris's extreme actions make us think about what brings true freedom in our lives? Does freedom really matter?

In my opinion, Chris was running away from any type of control. He desired a life where he didn't need to constantly surpass expectations or act accordingly with what society deemed as adequate. He ran away to places that might seem uninterrupted, but quickly learned for exemple, that he needed a license to row down a natural and public river. Due to these occurrences, I find his choice of destination, something unfit for his own expectations. The fact that he burned his money, didn't mean that he didn't go into shops or houses where money was the "thing" holding it all together, he still nurtured that part of society inside of him. Aside from that, he also encountered people that still tried in some way to contend his ambitions. Therefore, I don't consider his actions that extreme. I think that subconsciously he still wished to be in contact with the world he wanted, consciously, so much to run from. In conclusion, I don't think Chris's actions were extreme therefore didn't represent true freedom. I don't think that his own mind, that grew up in modern civilization, is free from influence in order to make such a determined and drastic change in lifestyle, no matter how academically studied and dogmatic he was. I think Chris McCandless would've never been able to be as free as he desired.

Freedom does not necessarily matter. First of all, in the world we live in today, we accommodate multiple religions, cultures and ethnicities that see the definition of freedom very differently. I think people don't need freedom, but they need to feel as if they were. If we live under a government, we are not free, though at the end of the day what truly matters is that I feel as if I was free to do anything I desire. Therefore, I believe in the satisfaction in blindness rather than consciousness and dissatisfaction, because in such cases, people will be held back from being happy by the things that are accessible.

What is the importance of the Black Community feeling a sense of belonging in contemporary society?

The establishment of a sense of belonging has significant importance in promoting the overall well-being and progress of the black community within contemporary society. The feeling of belonging enhances psychological well-being by encouraging happiness, self-assurance, and overall life contentment, while also enabling social bonding and support systems that are essential for overcoming life's difficulties. Furthermore, it provides doors for individual and professional advancement, guaranteeing fair and equal availability of educational possibilities, career prospects, and many other resources. From a cultural perspective, the act of belonging serves to enhance one's sense of pride in their ancestry and fortify their cultural identity, so enabling individuals to accept their uniqueness and actively seek acknowledgment within society. Significantly, the cultivation of a sense of belongingness is closely linked to the principles of social justice and equality, since inclusive settings facilitate the promotion of impartiality, inclusivity, and the validation of a wide range of perspectives. Hence, fostering a sense of inclusion within the black community is not just a question of personal satisfaction, but also a crucial stride towards constructing a fairer and more impartial society for everyone.

Both Chris McCandless and J. Cole present critical analysis of capitalism in their own literary works. McCandless's defiance of financial goods and society conventions, as seen via his expedition into the wild and forsaking of his privilledged childhood, functions as an individual act of opposition to capitalist principles and consumerism. Conversely, J. Cole articulates his critical viewpoints on capitalism by means of his musical compositions and active engagement in activism, so emphasizing the structural disparities and societal inequities maintained by capitalist frameworks, with a special focus on underprivileged populations. McCandless's critique exhibits a greater emphasis on individualism and experiential elements, whereas J. Cole's critique adopts a larger and systemic approach, therefore including their distinct viewpoints and modes of expression. Collectively, both provide valuable perspectives on the limitations of capitalism and its influence on society, compelling listeners to embrace principles that extend beyond financial achievement.

Edvard Munch's artwork, "The Scream," evokes profound emotional distress and seclusion, so striking a chord with Chris McCandless's want for emotional seclusion and his perception of emotional alienation within contemporary society. Similar to the protagonist shown in the artwork, McCandless had significant internal conflict and existential distress, prompting him to choose seclusion and disengage from conventional norms and materialistic principles. McCandless purposefully chose to seclude himself on his expedition into the wild, with the intention of establishing a more profound bond with the natural world and finding solace from the intricacies and demands of contemporary civilization. Nevertheless, this inclination towards emotional seclusion also heightened his emotions of solitude and estrangement, mirroring a more extensive perception of detachment from the external environment.

Growing up opinionated, curious, and far from ugly (hahaha) has had its tantrums. My dad always encouraged me to consider knowledge as power, therefore, always seek and attempt to gain it as much as I possibly could. For the period I was homeschooled, around 12 years of age, he made me devour history and politics 24/7 with verbal quizzes prompted as dinner's entertainment. When arriving at Avenues, I faced some challenges in adapting my recently acquired knowledge hunger. Boys soon picked up on my nerdiness and used it as a mechanism for bullying and collective irritation. My teenage love life also thrived at the time, and unfortunately my little heart got broken through peaks of jealousy driven at me as well as "another woman" hahahaha.

I was only 13 years old when I learned that being a driven WOMAN is hard. It comes with labels and jokes that move against your current. At home, me and my parents would practice ways in which I could position my arguments in an irrefutable way, which translated into my very successful MUN career, and also learned to separate the personal from the professional when entering a discussion. For example, if I were to be discussing, debating or positioning myself against someone who made me, in my personal life, feel inferior or vulnerable, I would disconsider their existence outside from that conversation in order to preserve my confidence and performance in delivering my phrases. Ever since, I believe I have grown wiser and stronger as a person and I have no one else to thank if not toxic men and their negative masculinity.

Hannah Earnshaw, the one who voluntarily registered for a one-way trip to Mars, and Chris McCandless, exhibit resemblances in their willingness to abandon the conveniences of traditional existence in order to achieve their aspirations. Earnshaw's choice demonstrates a desire for the discovery and progression of human understanding, whereas McCandless pursued individual autonomy and a connection with the natural world. Both individuals shown bravery and resolve in accepting ambiguity and jeopardizing their lives in the pursuit of their interests/dogmas. The narratives presented by these individuals serve as compelling testaments to the inherent ability of the human spirit to endure and strive for individual satisfaction, even when confronted with enormous challenges and uncertain results.

Being able to dive into his life's purpose and detailed lyric seems more personal and interesting than most connections we have done through the Modules and other project courses. Its good to bring in the new into Human Evolution!

The song "Love Yourz" by J. Cole explores themes of appreciation, satisfaction, and self-acceptance, offering a contemplative and introspective experience. J. Cole useS emotional lyrics and a soulful melody to foster an appreciation for the bounties given upon individuals and to promote a sense of contentment in the current moment, as opposed to perpetually pursuing financial gain or seeking external approval. The song recognizes the challenges and difficulties that individuals encounter, but highlights the significance of deriving happiness and purpose from one's own situation, irrespective of external influences or comparisons to others.

During Science class, we see the ways in which humans have adjusted to their environment to ensure their survival. Similar to Chris, these creatures have developed their cognitive abilities and total capabilities through the acquisition of survival strategies and the adoption of coexisting behaviors. The diverse methods by which humans have established their means of subsistence on our planet throughout history provide us a multitude of avenues via which we might actively pursue our aspirations and principles. I am curious if Chris holds the belief that the initial Homo sapiens possessed a higher level of spiritual development or a deeper understanding of genuine happiness, considering the absence of social institutions or capitalism. Elon Musk, another subject discussed in the module is a key representation of our present to future evolution. As humans have attempted to explore and disfruit of all elements available on Earth, and now Musk and a group of long termism scientists have been stretching our existence to a multi-planetary existence. This step towards the next way in which humans can come to exist is now a step towards drastic evolution that'd include change in behavior, culture, geography and technological advancements.
