The documentary begins with the viewer meeting trainers at SeaWorld, their motivations to work at SeaWorld, and what it takes to work there. 

Viewers then meet Tilikum, SeaWorld’s flagship 12,000-pound orca. The trainers teach these beautiful beasts tricks and behaviour that amaze spectators. However, there is much danger associated with being a trainer, which is revealed by examining the deaths of the three trainers throughout the documentary.

Orcas are incredibly intelligent mammals who communicate through complex vocals. They require acres upon acres of the ocean every day to thrive in their natural habitat. The documentary reveals the despicable conditions that the orcas face under SeaWorld's care. For much of the year, for 14 hours straight, the orcas are trapped in a tiny housing “box” that is 20 feet wide and 30 feet deep, ensuring activists don’t break into the facilities at night and cut the ropes to set the orcas free. 

Viewers learn that a consequence of the “box” is food deprivation, which infuriates the orcas and makes them dangerous for the trainers, and hyper-aggressive to each other. 

A common theme throughout the documentary is misinformation. For example, viewers learn that SeaWorld employees lie about orcas and facts about them, such as their lifespan and the state of their dorsal fins. 

My name is Matty McDonald, and I am writing to you to express my absolute disgust after watching the documentary "Blackfish" and learning about your company and the deplorable conditions in which SeaWorld holds animals in captivity. SeaWorld's treatment of orcas is cruel for several reasons, such as their habitat, diet, and psychological health.

First, orcas swim approximately 40 miles per day and communicate with each other through extremely intelligent modes of communication. At SeaWorld, Orcas are trapped in tanks during the day that are about 90 by 50 feet, and even worse, at night, they are placed in a housing “box” that is 20 feet wide and 30 feet deep. How would you feel if you were trapped in a dark box at night and not able to move for 14 hours at some points of the year?

Second, due to the lack of sunlight for much of the year, the orcas at SeaWorld are deprived of food in the tanks at night because of the amount of time they are in their "box". The lack of food can lead to other consequences such as hindered psychological health. In addition, the orcas can get aggressive toward each other, putting them in danger of injuries. Even worse, SeaWorld puts its staff in harm's way by having them work with orcas who are held hostage and suffer from food deprivation, as demonstrated by Tilikum the orca who had killed three SeaWorld trainers.
