The team was the winner of the first edition of the Brazilian Championship, in 1971 - its only title in the competition. It was also national runner-up in 1977 (undefeated), 80 and 99. Atlético also won the first edition of the Campeonato Mineiro, which was called Campeonato da Cidade at the time. The alvinegra team is the biggest champion of the State of MG, with 40 cups - 19 in the old version and 21 in the current one. The main alvinegro idol is striker Reinaldo, who played for 12 years at the club and is the top scorer, with 255 goals.

The Governador Magalhães Pinto Stadium, Mineirão, belongs to the state government and is the second largest in Brazil. It is located in the Pampulha region, in Belo Horizonte, and today has a capacity for 75,783 spectators. It was inaugurated on September 5, 1965, with the 1-0 victory of the Minas Gerais national team over River Plate, from Argentina. The record attendance at the Mineirão is 132,834 people, in the final of the 1997 Mineiro Championship, between Cruzeiro and Villa Nova. The stadium, which usually hosts matches for the Brazilian national team, will be one of the venues for the 2014 World Cup.
