The Olmecs were the first major civilization that formed in Mexico. They were located in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, which is present day Veracruz and Tabasco. The Olmecs’ population began advancing during the Mesoamerican’s formative period from 1500 B.C. to about 400 B.C. Art in the culture was what they were first defined as- their colossal heads, altars, and monuments were recognized as their art style. Living in the Gulf of Mexico for nearly 1,000 years, they were considered the first ordered civilization- influencing the Mayans and Aztecs.
