William Henry Gates III (Seattle, October 28, 1955), 1 known as Bill Gates, is an American businessman, computer scientist and philanthropist, co-founder of the software company Microsoft along with Paul Allen.4 His fortune is estimated at 89.2 billion dollars according to Forbes magazine, a fact that defines him as the richest man in the world.2 5 6 In March 1999, before the bursting of the dot-com bubble, his net worth amounted to 136,000 million dollars, which made him the tenth richest person in the history of humanity.7
He is one of the best-known entrepreneurs that emerged during the beginnings of personal computers. He has been criticized for his business tactics, which have been considered anticompetitive, an opinion that in some cases has been upheld by numerous court decisions.8
He is married to Melinda Gates, 1 with whom he shares the presidency of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, dedicated to rebalancing opportunities in health and education at the local level, especially in the less favored regions, 9 which is why they have been awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2006.3
