The Puritans were a group of religious people that came from England. They believed that God wanted the church to be plain and simple and believed in many things that churches still believe today. Their beliefs included total depravity, predestination, limited atonement, and the grace of God. All of these beliefs contributed to the Salem Witch Trials. These beliefs caused the puritans to become constantly living in fear and led to the accusations of many innocent people.

Witch hunts in Salem, MA began when people began to accuse each other of practicing witch craft. Many people would confess to being a witch in order to get out of cruel and unusual punishments. The punishments included tying someone up and throwing them to see if they either floated or sank indicating whether that person was a witch or not. If the person floated then they were a witch and if they sank and drowned then they were innocent. The Puritans believed that there were many physical signs of being a witch including the witch's teat.

During the Red Scare, many American citizens were suspicious that there were secret communists that were trying to sabotage America. Much like the witch hunt in the Salem Witch Trails, people would accuse each other of being communists. The accused's names would go on a piece of paper and John McCarthy would read the person's name and expose them of being a communist. If you were accused of being a communist your life would be ruined and you would not be able to get a job or have a good life until much later. Your friends would stay away in fear that they too would get accused of being communist.

The Puritans believed in something called limited atonement which means that God only died for a select group of people and that the only way to know if you were one of the selected was to feel the grace of god. The Puritans believed that if someone felt as if they were getting preached to directly during a church service that they felt the grace of god and that they would be saved. These people that felt the grace of god would come up to the preacher and confess their sins. Another way that they would feel the grace of God is when they were out in nature and they started to cry. These people would then pray to God and say how appreciative they were for nature.

The puritans believed that anything negative that happened to them was a result of someone else practicing witchcraft. They believed that the devil had recruited others to infiltrate society and that negative things happened because of the witches. Things like fire, sickness, and flood were believed to because of witches and not anything else. Bacteria and natural disasters were not believed to be the cause of these things because the Puritans did not know of them at the time. These negative things led to the persecution of suspected witches.
