If the person floated then they were a witch and if they sank and drowned then they were innocent. If you were accused of being a communist your life would be ruined and you would not be able to get a job or have a good life until much later. The Puritans believed that if someone felt as if they were getting preached to directly during a church service that they felt the grace of god and that they would be saved. These people that felt the grace of god would come up to the preacher and confess their sins. Another way that they would feel the grace of God is when they were out in nature and they started to cry. Bacteria and natural disasters were not believed to be the cause of these things because the Puritans did not know of them at the time.
