I completely agree that the challenge is in the balance. I can see the need and place for student voice, as I believe it enhances engagement, but I am also reminded that teenagers are teenagers who often need guidance, and must learn to adhere to set expectations (which I understand is key in many professional workplaces - sometimes a job must be done). In classes, I encourage risk-taking and ownership of learning. I try to allow for as much student choice as is possible within the confines of the curriculum and am happy to change my direction if student interest or suggestions lead learning elsewhere.

It takes a great deal of flexibility to adapt to their desires and needs and interests; this is where education is heading, and I am on board but there are many students who require a clear routine and structure in order to function. This type of learning is messy.
