Social media might not always be a positive place, giving off good vibes. It also affects people in a way you might not expect. Teenagers all over the world are negatively affected by social media, starting with their mental health. There have been multiple studies showing that teens have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression, due to the amount of time spent on social media. In my personal life I definitely saw a lot of my friends have social anxiety from social media, and when they took a break they realized that their anxiety hasn't been bad. The point is that social media affected their mental health.

FOMO is short for, fear of missing out. Say you are scrolling through social media and you see your friend post a picture without you, most people would say that they don’t care but it can affect them in the future. Teenagers stuff their feelings and then that will start to build up once they see one of those pictures again, and they think the only solution is to just not talk to anyone and keep to themselves. This whole process started just from that one post on social media. A study from an interview with a teenager related to this says, “Teenagers are affected in a bad way because they sometimes feel left out or they feel insecure when interacting with social media.” Guster

Something on a survey saying that the more social media platforms someone uses the less face to face interactions they make. “A study based on the cms students show that teenagers who use social media for over 3 hours report that they like to text or call when socializing.” Considering this you can take into conclusion the majority of their day is spent on social media, and they don’t have time to socialize in real life. I know a lot of people in my life who have developed social anxiety from this, and that has to do with mental health, this is all just coming from social media.

Yes, teenagers have been seen to take breaks because they see they have been affected. In a newsela article it explained that the kids took a break from social media because they knew they needed to. It then mentions later in the article that they have done this because they started to feel anxious or insecure. They should be able not to feel this at all.

Social media can clearly affect many teenagers' mental health enough to the point where they have to put it away for a month or more. Concluding All of this information, think about what you post on social media, and take that into conclusion, how might it affect others negatively or positively. This should be the lesson people should take away. Social media in the end will always negatively affect someone.

My Op-Ed

In my Op-Ed I want like to make it clear to people that some teenagers are struggling with their metal health, due to social media over taking their lives. In my op-ed I stated that they sort of expect positive comments and multiple likes, but life will never be like that and reality is just not perfect. As humans our mental health is very important so is our social life. The part I highlighted was my best part and most important part. This is an introduction to one of the reason why teenagers get diagnosed with mental health illnesses due to social media. There is also another part where I share that my friend have had social anxiety from social media and they tell me a lot about how they feel like they have no friends due to other people posting without them on social media.
