It couldn't be better." Also it is shown distant because the protagonist is referred to as 'the son'.
Personally the authors experience with his father was very distant as well because his mother had died from cancer and the father didn't care less about the  children. The father was very abusive towards the children. Before his mom died the father also didn't care for the mother, and the father was a police officer. That is why he wrote this story.

In the story, John McGahern labelled the son and 'the son...'. This dedicates to the fact that the son does not belong to anyone, including his father, because if he does, it would've been 'his son...'.The author used a 'show, not tell' technique by changing the pronouns so the reader can deduce that the relationship between the protagonist and his father was unfortunate. This does provide the audience with a hint, foreshadowing, to expect what will happen in the upcoming situation.

This story is autobiographical because the context applies to the history of John McGahern. Instead of using crying, the author used screaming from a far distance, this indicates that the writer feels isolated acknowledging on the choice of the words he used. McGahern also used 'the son' which to many reader seems odd but this specifies on the relationship he had with his father after his mum passes away due to cancer ( also written in the book ). The uncle in the story claims to have no autobiographical meaning whatsoever; the writer added caring and communicative personality with humour towards the uncle. Although the uncle was just a 'myth', McGahern was using him just to represent what he was lacking in reality.
