As a result of papal sins and misgivings of the church,  the protestant religion came as a protest. 

During this time, the belief in purgatory was a very big factor of the Catholic religion.
Catholicism is identified through the belief in the Holy Trinity and the life of Jesus Christ. During the period before the Reformation and to a lesser extent, the Catholic church held significant political power in the European countries. 

While the belief system is the same core, Catholicism delineates itself in several ways. First and foremost being that salvation will come through faith and the teaching of the scripture. Catholicism follows the pope and there are central powers that control the dealings of the Catholic church.

Protestantism has no centralized power and that God has the only say over morality. In terms of the Eucharist, where Catholics believe it is the body and blood of Christ, Protestants believe that Jesus' blood and body coexists with the bread and wine. Today Lutheranism has about 80 million adherents mainly centralized in Germany and Scandinavian nations. The central doctrine of Lutheranism is the doctrine of Justification which is the belief that salvation is only attainable through faith in God alone, God's grace alone, as well as the teachings of the scriptures alone. Lutherans reject the idea of committing good deeds as an automatic passage to heaven as those deeds originated in the grace of God and humans are naturally sinful. Many of the denomination's beliefs are expressed in the Book of Concord which is a compilation of numerous texts written by Martin Luther himself (e.g.The Augsburg Confession, The Three Ecumenical Creeds)

Contrary to what the name suggests Calvinism encompasses a diverse  set of beliefs with multiple influences not one singular set of beliefs established by John Calvin. To be Calvinist it generally denotes that one believes that salvation is only attainable through God's grace alone not through personal merit. The most distinctive aspect of Calvinism is its doctrine of Predestination, or the belief predetermined salvation or damnation.

All denominations of Protestantism were formed out of protest of the Catholic church and the scandals that occurred within it. Scripture is meant to be interpreted by each individual as they read it, not through the teachings of a priest or religious figure. This manifests itself in the religion as the disenfranchisement of infant baptism, giving members of the church the opportunity to accept the church at a reasonable age, giving them the ability to actually choose to be a member. Classically, Anabaptists were marginalized due to their radical beliefs on the lack of scripture on infant baptism.
The members follow the Sermon on the Mount literally and are very civilly engaged.

They also follow the writings of the Church Fathers. The church is traditionally led by the Privy Council, which serves to guide the English monarch.Their ideals were too radical to satisfy Catholics. This included the banning of many Catholic ritualistic traditions, the performance of Communion in English, the discouragement of veneration(worship of Saints), and the introduction of clerical marriage. Radical Protestants, however, were not fans of the church either, due to the tameness of its differences from the Catholic Church.
