Inspired By Plants

My favorite discussion during the semester was discussion 3 'Inspired by Plants' because I enjoyed getting the chance to simply breathe and connect with plants in a new way. It is hard to find time to connect with the various plants around us, especially during the semester, so to have an assignment geared towards finding inspiration was appreciated. I have attached my response to the discussion below.

What are your Results really telling you?

For my IAP this semester, I decided to learn about the motivations of volunteers at greenspaces; specifically comparing retired and working volunteer motivations. All throughout the process I was worried about what my action plan should be, because what you do with the information you learn is a key component in this program.
I had an idea of what I would like to do, but I wasn't able to form an exact plan. My instructor, Ken said something that should have been obvious to me, but it wasn't until after he said it. He said to us, form your action plan around your results. Even after he said those words I hadn't entirely grasped the concept because we needed to have an idea of what we needed to do for school.
It wasn't until after I analyzed the data and looked at the results that I thought, what are my results telling me? What should I do for my action plan that would be beneficial? I didn't get that many responses so I thought that I might consider redoing my survey. However, I needed to generate ideas for the organization I work for now based on my results. Ultimately I came up with a few ideas and decided that I would consider redoing my survey, but get IRB approval for the future that way I could publish my findings.
Therefore my biggest takeaway from the semester was to acknowledge and critically think about what my results are telling me; to have an idea of what I would like to do for my action plan, but to be open to changing it based on my results.
I have attached my poster presentation and my paper below.

Living in a world where we see plants...

I started the semester thinking that the concept of people being blind to plants varies from individual to individual, and I ended the semester with the same thought. All semester I had people tell me that this world is blind to the plants around them, and I think that is partly true but not entirely. The reason I don't think it is entirely true is because of the interactions I have seen between plants and people this semester. Most notably the interactions I have seen between strangers and plants. I tried to take time to sit and observe peoples responses to plants in a room, plants in a pot, and plants outside. What I noticed (not based on empirical evidence) is that people notice plants, but their thirst for learning more is not present. I have seen people touch leaves or bark on a tree. I have seen them smell flowers or bury their hands in soil to plant a sapling. The people would ask a brief question like "I wonder what type of tree this is?", but wouldn't answer the question. So I end with the idea that people can be blind to the plants around them, but I think people are blind to a variety of things around them. What we need to be doing is showing people how to answer their own questions, to inspire people to follow up with their own thoughts, to love inquiry at its core, and to be confident with the idea that it is okay to not know something or to be wrong.
