Essential elements about telling a story: background/context, the characters of the stories, the challenges/issues they are facing, the 5Ws and H (what, where, when, who, why, how), and possibly to what positive impact and change you expect this story to trigger or drive.  

To capture them in an audio-visual way: pictures/videos often say more than words, but it is important to have a clear message to avoid confusion and/or misinterpretation. I would say depending on the issue, the focus needs to be clear (could be on the people themselves, the context they live in, the nature etc.). Audio-visuals can trigger very powerful emotions quicker with the right combination of audio and visual. 

-  Understand about the context (research in advance to understand about the context)

-  Identify characters for the story

-  Know what allows, what not allows

-  Tell the story in dignity manner

While setting those lots of b-rolls to support the story to give clues about the environment and surroundings and to avoid the talking heads.

- Have a charismatic person who transmits the message and who is capable of capturing the public and getting them to sympathize with him and commit to the story to take action.

- Have good images/audio to illustrate the story and the hero. 

The capturing of them depends in many ways, as a picture is worth a thousand words, and using audio-visual to tell the story means you should show more than you tell.

What the issues or needs and what can we do about it and what will be the impact.  Who is central to the history, for example if that is a human centered story, why should we address the need of the people in a dignity manner with respect to their privacy. We should also be cautious to avoid stigmatise or endanger them. In turn it to an audiovisual way, the headline should be clear, we should begin in a strong angle, get to the point and have a strong end.

·       First & foremost, make it really interesting, i.e. a story that sparks interest, hope and showcases tangible results/impact on people’s lives. 

·       Capture the 5 Ws across the story, while deciding on a specific angle for the story (the people, places, the context etc.)

·       A compelling headline that sparks interest, attention, emotion etc. 

·       A compelling lead, with a strong actionable start, which can grab the readers’ attention and spur them to read the full story.

·       Selection of a main character for the story

·       Use of attractive and actionable photos, particularly photos and video testimonials of people. 

·       Use of quotes from people

·       A strong end for the story

But first and foremost, showing people's situation/context in a dignified and respected manner, do no harm with your images and know the objective behind your action before hand.
