Rex demonstrates an example of self reliance. As Rex Walls states this quote, he is teaching Jeannette how to swim on her own. Rex Walls can be considered as the patriarch of the Walls family because he is the one mainly responsible for the good of his family and is the one providing life for them. Jeannette argues to Rex that she was never hurt by him but in reality she just accepted the fact that he will never change. Rex demonstrates false hope , he made his family believe that one day they’ll live in a castle made out of glass in the desert. Rex insists to his children of creating this house but only until they strike rich which is very unlikely. Rosemary displays neglect by not giving the proper care to her kids . The quote shows how Rosemary would rather make paintings than feed her starving kids . As of not providing the proper care she gets mad that the kids eat butter and sugar which she was saving for later. An addition she hids under the covers to eat a Hershey’s chocolate bar and doesn’t offer any to the kids who haven’t eaten all day.

With Rexs blessing Jeannette went up stairs , without remorse Rex continued playing pool. This shows how selfish Rex is when it comes to money. He is so self absorbed that he allows his daughter go into a strange mans apartment , fully knowing his intentions.
