Susan Wood and I created Leeward's first ENG 100 OER course in Laulima and Google Sites. It is now available solely in Laulima using Lessons. We are also currently in process of migrating the Classic Google Site to the new Google Sites for anyone needing the course content outside of Laulima. I've linked the instructor's guide below but note that it will be updated once we update the Google Site. Feel free to leave us a comment.

Rachael Inake and I first created this renewable assignment in 2019. I gave my students the assignment of writing profiles of staff, lecturers, and faculty who volunteered to be interviewed for this project. The students also wrote their own profiles to introduce themselves and share their experiences and advice with other students. Shortly before the transition to online learning in Spring 2020, I worked with Camden Barruga and the Video Production Unit to record my students' speeches about their experiences studying at Leeward CC. I hope to continue to add to this project once we are able to do more work in person again. If you'd like to be interviewed by a student and featured on the website, please reach out!

Recently switched to a better OER textbook for my business writing class. More and more resources are becoming available each year, so it's worth taking a second (or third) look at the respositories. I found my textbook at OER Commons, which is linked on the Leeward Library's OER Guide.

Teaching without a textbook has been a challenge but there are so many programs and videos that do what I need in a much more fun, engaging and most importantly up-to-date way that the students are using materials with current language and issues, not issues at the time the textbook was published. We’ve worked with Quizlet for vocabulary and terminology, grammar videos, online OER worksheets, NY Times images for writing and movie clips. Harry Potter is a foundation for all of these language practice activities as well as fostering critical thinking, reflection and narrative analysis. Thanks to public resources, the students feel freer to find new topics that interest them and learn about citations in an organic way. It’s not an absolute to not use textbooks for me, but using OER definitely helps with current affairs but continuing with academic rigor.

Fun & important... but not easy

So, "easy" is not the word I would use to describe my switch to OER. I resisted a little because of the significant amount of work for no extra pay that it entailed. I was intrigued by the social justice aspect of it, but also felt like I was treading water already with designing several different courses from scratch using a textbook and learning everything else about how to be a professor. It wasn't until I fully embraced the customization aspect of it, that I fully bought in. Once I was over the mental hurdle of "I don't have to cover every single sentence in a textbook" I was able to focus on the material and assignments that I felt were most important (while also, of course, keeping SLOs in mind). Now, it is no question that any new course I develop is OER. But it has taken me a few years to get there (and a lot of professional development!). So, if you are just starting out and it seems overwhelming and looks easy to everyone else, don't despair! And use your librarians & instructional designers as resources. I used to think I had to come to them with a clear cut plan, but they can be so helpful at the beginning with brainstorming and suggesting resources too that now I email them with "I would like to do xyz, do you have an idea of how I could make that work?" and even if they don't know the answer right then, they keep working on it.

I'm using "Communication in the Real Word" and "Stand Up Speak Out" as recommended by two of my Speech department colleagues. I take chapter highlights combined with other credible sources, and I create instructional Youtube videos for my students each week. The multisensory approach of reading and watching keeps them interested in the content! These learning tools, combined with Laulima Forums and Flipgrid student video responses, and of course, good old fashioned writing assignments, has successfully kept my students engaged this semester! Aloha to you all, Sharolyn
