The Townshend Acts were a series of acts passed beginning in 1767 by the Parliament of Great Britain relating to the British colonies in North America. The acts are named after Charles Townshend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who proposed the program.

WHY DID THE BRITISH PASS THE TOWNSHEND ACTS? The TownShend Act were met with resistance in the colonies, prompting the occupation of Boston by British troops, which eventually resulted in the Boston Massacre As a result of widespread protest in the American colonies, Parliament began to partially repeal the Townshend duties.
HOW DID THE COLONISTS REACT TO THIS ACT? The Townshend Acts were actually a series of taxes and laws imposed upon the colonists. The first, the Townshend Revenue Act, placed a tax on glass, paint, oil, lead, paper, and tea. Other bills included in the Townshend Acts contributed to the colonists angry reaction.
