Author: Carmen Agra Deedy
Illustrator: Thomas Gonzalez
This story tackles the topic of culture. It ties in two very different cultures, but how the two can come together in a time of need. I believe that this book would be great for second or third graders. It references without saying, the tragic events of 9/11, and I think that at this age, they have some background knowledge on this date and an understanding of the events that occurred. This book also gives explicit details into the culture of village in western Kenya. In the context of how complex this book is, I would say it is very complex. It has an underlining meaning without stating it. There are also a multitude of words that are more complex and not seen daily.

Author: Marcus Pfister
I enjoy this story for many reasons. The two main ideas I take away from this story is learning how to share but also to not be greedy. This would be great for kindergartners. Tying this in to a lesson on how to be a good friend. This gets the children who may have not been exposed to other children before, the meaning behind sharing with one another. I think In terms of text complexity, I believe that this would be moderately complex. It has just enough unfamiliar words for the children to learn from but also an easy enough overall message for the children to understand and grasp the concept of.

Author: Trudy Ludwig

Illustrator: Patrice Barton
This book teaches children to be nice and kind to everyone. I believe this brings to life the saying, "treat others the way you wanted to be treated". It gives children a new outlook on what exclusion looks like. I think this book would be appropriate for first or second graders. It allows the children at this age, to discuss the meaning behind being excluded. Learning about different emotions a person can feel. For text complexity, I would say that this story is very complex. Through the pictures alone, how the colors are used, and the meaning of the book, I think this makes this a complex text for the children.

Showing how not having the glitz, glamour, or newest gadgets can make for a happy life if you take a second to enjoy the other things in life. It teaches children by the end of the story to be thankful for the little things. I think this would be appropriate for second or third graders. It introduces a new idea of being thankful and a different meaning for it. I think that this text is very complex. Until the end of the story, you do not know what the main message is. It keeps you wondering where the story is going and what it's purpose is.

Author: Dan Santat
This book is all about over coming your fears. Being able to get back up again when something goes wrong and finding the beauty within. I would consider this to be a a very complex story. It deals with multiple themes and at the end reveals a hidden theme. It also has some unfamiliar words. The illustrations in the story go along perfectly with the story as well and I do not think that you could fully grasp the story without them.
