  • Dice & Roll-and-Stamp Games
  • I usually have the kids play this game in pairs, with each person using a different color crayon. They share one piece of paper.
  • Player 1 rolls a die and determines the amount of dots on the die. She finds the appropriate numeral on the paper and colors it in.
  • Player 2 goes and does the same.
  • Play continues until there are no numbers left. Whoever has the most can take the paper home.
  • With a laminated color copy, glass gems or bingo chips can be used to cover the numbers.

  • Children can use clothespins with the number cards. They pin the clothespin on the appropriate number after counting the transportation vehicles.
  • The children can use toy vehicles to make this a more hands-on lesson. For example, if they have a card with three cars on it, the kids would grab three toy cars. They’d work together to match the pattern of the cars on the picture card. Then they could determine the appropriate number.

  • Children can work independently or with a friend to complete the puzzles. Laminated versions would be great in the math center. Once the puzzles are assembled, children can point to each and count.
  • The puzzles can be completed, then broken apart (but kept in numerical order). Children can then bring out toy cars to match the numerals. Underneath the number 2, they would place two cars. Under the number 5, they’d place five cars.
  • If printing so each child gets a copy, the kiddos could cut the strips apart themselves. Then they’d mix them up and reassemble the puzzles. If they wanted, the children could glue the puzzle back together on a piece of construction paper.

    Each month, we kept track of how many airplanes flew over our playground while we were outside. Whenever the children saw airplanes outside, we would keep a count in our heads (usually no more than 3 flew over). Then when we went inside, we would add that many airplanes to our chart.     Make parachutes with a 14-inch (approx.) square from a plastic trash bag, tape a 16-inch (approx.) string to each corner with masking tape, and tie all four pieces of string to a 3/4-inch metal washer. This is not easy for children to do. You could make this with each child, or send home the materials and directions for a home activity. Either way children will need individual help. I also made a larger parachute using a whole trash bag tied on four sides to a stuffed animal. The kids had fun dropping this from the classroom loft.
