Sunflowers are our chosen artefact because it is often associated with positive qualities such as warmth, happiness, and optimism. A leader who is able to embody these traits and create a positive, supportive environment for their followers can be seen as a "sunflower leader". Additionally, sunflowers can represent growth and development, as they start as small seeds and grow into tall, impressive plants. This can be seen as a metaphor for a leader who is able to nurture the potential of their followers and help them grow and develop to their full potential.

While sunflowers may not be a traditional artefact associated with leadership, they can still serve as a powerful symbol of the qualities and values that are prized in effective leaders.

(Play the video)

Leadership is about growth and collaboration. We each adopted a portion of the sunflower, with our own individual styles and preference. However, at the back of our mind, we have a vision of how the sum of parts will look like when we piece them together.

Taking a leaf (pun intended) out of van Gogh's wisdom, "I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart." - Vincent van Gogh

This quote by Vincent van Gogh speaks to the importance of dedication and perseverance in achieving one's goals in leadership. As a leader, it's important to approach our work with a sense of passion and wholeheartedness in order to inspire and motivate those around us (#leadcareinspire).

We made this artefact using 4 separate pieces of paper that forms the sunflower; each of us colours a quadrant. Our sunflower is 'supported' by our wooden 'aeroplane', which is designed to be the stem and the base, with wings (leaves).

The usage of the wooden aeroplane is intentional - the wooden aeroplane is synonymous with 'SOARing' (to greater heights), and similarly, this reminds us of the sunflower, that grows towards the direction of the sun.

The colours on the petals of our sunflower symbolise the journey a leader takes (which also includes the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills, and other competencies and values a leader acquire in the process)

The start of this journey (pale yellow petals) is reflected in the top left quadrant. As we go anti-clockwise, we see the colour of the petals maturing to shades of yellow, orange and red, until the petals display a burst of vibrant rainbow colours (in the top right quadrant).

2 other analogies that our group draw from the sunflower are
1. the fact that the sunflower can grow just about anywhere because of its adaptability to soils from sand to clay and a strong tolerance to dry soils. Being a leader requires one to be adaptable and flexible.
The soils of life might not always be rich and moist and conducive to growth, but the effective leader adapts, and makes the best of every opportunity presented. In order to do this, the leader must also be resilient even when the going gets tough - i.e. akin to the harsh terrain/ environment that sunflowers may be in). This reminds us of another quote as well - 'to bloom where you are planted'.

2. A single sunflower can hold up to 2,000 seeds, and those seeds are filled with vitamins and minerals. Similarly, an effective leader is always looking to multiply his/her leadership by raising up others around him/her. The leader is looking to plant seeds and cultivate a harvest-field full of other sunflower leaders filled with talents and abilities and this is something that we, as leaders, should also do, i.e. to build and develop other leaders as well.

All in all, leadership is the sum of all parts (just like all the mixed materials we use to create our sunflower).

It is a congregation of different abilities, skills and tools; a reflection of unique experiences, beliefs and passions,

It is a rewarding journey (as depicted by the shades of colours on our sunflower petals) which will help shape us to be better leaders and team players as well.

Our artefact depicts vision and strategy, collaboration and communication

As leaders need to bring together diverse perspectives and skills to create a successful team. A leader who fosters collaboration and encourages teamwork can create a more cohesive and effective group.

In order to assemble the pieces of a picture correctly, each part needs to be clearly labeled and positioned in the right place. Similarly, a leader needs to communicate clearly and effectively with team members to ensure that everyone understands their role and responsibilities, and how their work fits into the bigger picture.

Just as the four parts of a picture need to be assembled correctly to create the complete image, a leader needs to have a clear vision and a plan to bring together the different elements of a project or organization to achieve a common goal.

2 Sunflowers represent people and vision. As a leader, clear vision and clarity in our processes are very important so that proper planning can take place. The goal post must not shift if our WHYs are very clear to us. Whether we want 2, 3 or 4 sunflowers, as a leader, he or she needs to paint that path so that others will see the curves and lines of the painting and understand the leader's perspectives. As a leader, people matter. Motivation of his/her people must be a priority so that things can move and the sunflowers can grow. With motivation and clear guidance, the team will choose the right colour, the right texture and the right tools to paint a beautiful picture and thus achieving the objectives of the team.
