The book includes a keypad on which students can practice actually pressing the numbers. Some of the emergencies students will learn about in the book are things such as accidents, fires and other various emergencies.

Use In The Classroom: When learning about their community, students will begin to learn about situations where their community helpers can come and lend a hand. The book can be used in a read aloud and the students can have print outs of key pads to practice pressing the keys.

Set to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, the lyrics are “my name is ______ ______ here is where I live. (house number) (street name) in (town) (state)”. The song will be a tool to help the students learn and remember their full name and their address.

Use In The Classroom: In the first grade classroom, in early September this song can be used to reinforce students knowledge of their name and address. By ensuring students know this information, teachers are building on their knowledge about their community and ensuring they have learned an important personal fact. By teaching students their addresses, a teacher could link that information to when 911 is called.

That special guest will be a community helper, such as a police officer, firefighter or EMT. They will talk to the students about their job and what the students should know about their job and how to lend a hand in their community. 

Use In The Classroom: When the community visitor comes for their visit, the students will have already been introduced to different aspects of helping their community. They will have learned about who their community helpers are and how those people help when there is an emergency. Use In The Classroom: The students will be able to see what a fire station looks like and the elements of it which help firefighters keep communities safe and help when there is an emergency. After the field trip, the students will be able to reflect on what they saw and learned while on the field trip. Use In The Classroom: As the students continue to learn about their community, they are going to be learning about some of the people in their community who serve as resources for all those who live there.
