Kayaking is the activity of sitting in a kayak and being able to navigate waters by using a paddle to propel oneself, make turns and stop.

Kayaking can be done on any body of water man made or natural such, as indoor pools which can help train people to make them more comfortable on the water before moving to other areas. dependent on the level and skill of the person the location they can kayak become increasingly more challenging such as white water and the skills developed become more advanced such as self rescue and being able to help and train others.

Equipment

There is obviously a kayak and paddle/s

as well as a buoyancy aid to help assist people if they fall out. Helmet may also be required due to rocks or the location such as being on a river with a shallow bed or fast current. Appropriate clothing such as wet or dry suits this is to keep a thermal layer of protection it reduces the risk of catching a cold from the water or having contact with animals such as jelly fish. Appropriate foot wear such as water boots or trainers can help protect feet and provide extra comfort when entering and exiting. maps and compasses may also be used when traveling to locations such as when doing a stretch on a river or navigation a big area.

Instructors

when first taking part in any for of kayaking there will be people who have trained and done enough to have the qualification to teach. it is imperative to listen to these people as they have the know how on how to keep you safe while still enjoying the activity. Qualification can help prepare for more qualification for other water sports such as paddle boriding or sailing.

Skills needed to take part.

when taking part there is a physical demand required to effectively travel on the water, there is a lot of resistance in the water and it requires endurance to continue for a long time . Communication is also needed as we are not the only ones on the water. this comes in to yelling out clear instructions or using hand signals to talk over a long distance such as to change formation or to show a new direction of travel. can link to the armed forces in the army or navy when doing operations such as traveling quietly behind enemy lines. there are also mant=y limitations which could effect my participation. one of these is stamina having a low energy threshold maes i go slower and not as far in a team work situation this is negative as it mput more effort on others. another is confidence i am fine on the water but notbeing able to swim strong always makes me more conscious and aware, while this could be seen as acting safe it means i am putting way to much thought into being safe and am not enjoying the activite.

safety requirements

there has to be a lot of preparation and knowledge before kayaking such as being prepared .this means coming with appropriate clothing such as wet/dry suit and foot ware like trainers to protect feet. places such as canals may also require the person to wear a helmet to protect them selves in shallow waters or in areas with rocks and other issues such as boats or other kayakers

governing bodies

Paddle uk is a governing body in the uk in charge of canoeing, kayaking and other paddle sports including stand up paddle boarding. they are in charge of licensing and giving the correct qualifications for people to go on to the water safely guided or unguided. they can teach qualifications to others.

British canoeing

This agency goes more in depth with the qualifications allowing for more training on different water types such as coastal areas and white water training while providing the necessary theory and physical work needed to obtain qualifications.

https://britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/

Natural vs controlled environments

When getting different qualifications it is important to go to the correct place suitable for the training.

natural environments give real life experience and can be used in most places to train such as on a canal which is reasonable quite as it has low traffic and easy access how ever the water is not clear and is always cold .it may also not be suitable for some qualifications such as paddle safe as the murky water can make it more difficult on visibility or access in the event of an emergency.

controlled environments such as man made lakes ,reservoirs or pools allow for easy access, low traffic and facilities to aid learning such as bathrooms, changing rooms and more equipment ready and available including being close and accessible to emergency rooms. The down side is that there are less of these and can be more expensive as they are privately owned.

rock climbing is when a person goes up a wall or cliff face using ropes and grips to scale to the top.

rock climbing can be done in doors or outdoors at different levels dependent on the personal skills and abilities of the person taking part. indoors allows for a controlled environment with trainers there to guide you and support the efforts. Indoors provide walls wit angles terrain and other features such as corners and under hangs allowing for training in the the comfort and stability to increase confidence. Out doors are for the more confident with proper gear such as climbing ropes and cams to hold them in place .these don't offer the safety of indoors but give more adrenaline and real time climbing.

Equipment

clothing should be loose and comfortable to allow as much movement as possible such as shorts and short sleeve shirts .shoes such as trainers can be worn but professionally rock climbing shoes are worn. this is due to them curving the toes allowing for more grip and stability when climbing. Ropes and a harness will be used in both indoors and outdoors to provide support and safety when falling or when climbing down the wall.

skills

thee are many skills needed such as strength and endurance to climb as high as possible .decision making is also important as there are different climbing level available and different grips to use. this can be the difference between having more experience or making a challenge for you self. for exaple a challenge i would face as of right now would be gatting too tired quickly. i can improve upon this with further outside help such as regular exersise.another limitiation could also be location. i would have to travel to the places wich have the good facilities whichcan be some diatance making it also more expensive. these limitations can heve an effect on participation personnaly such as laking longer to learn. needing more support but can also effect any teamwork done as more work is put on others rather then being equally shared.

safety

when indoors it is important to have the correct size harness and counter weight to help protect your self when falling .out doors it is important to have the required training or being with some one with the training to minimize risk it is also a good idea to have people know of what and were you are going so that in an emergency they know how to contact you and you know the closest shelter or first aid place.

governing bodies

The British Mountaineering Council is the national representative body that champions the interests of climbers, hill walkers, mountaineers and ski mountaineers in England and Wales. We are also recognized by government as the national governing body for competition climbing.

 https://www.thebmc.co.uk/en/governance#:~:text=The%20British%20Mountaineering%20Council%20is,governing%20body%20for%20competition%20climbing.

personal experience

i quite liked rock climbing it was a fun challenge that took a lot of effort. i did most walls that were available to us at the time and even tried bouldering but that did not go so well .this has given me the needed insight in to the strength and endurance needed to climb. if i could do this back i would make better decisions such as looses clothing and choose a more difficult climbing route such as sticking to on colour.

kayaking

kayaking was a big step in my outdoor skills as i have not swam or been on water for many years. this activity helped me develop more water confidence, communication and teamwork exercise. for example when we had to switch kayaks with some one this meant a lot of communication and critical thinking. another example is when i fell in to the water i had to preform an assisted rescue to get my self back on to the kayak.

rock climbing

Rock climbing was eye opening. scaling the walls was a bit daunting in the first time but with the support and guidance given by instructors allowed for more enthusiasm and showed me the skills and strength needed in services. this is especially needed in the fire and rescue service or when going in to a third sector service such as cave and mountain rescue. skills like judgement and decision making were prominent during rock climbing for example where to put your feet and what grips to use to bring yourself up further this as well as some teamwork as for some of the walls needed two people, one to work as an anchor or ballast while to other climbs this helps provide calm clear instructions as they are not tired and are able to think strait reducing the risk of injury.

there is lots of teamwork done in kayaking for example depending on the craft some people shared a boat while others were by themselves. Other forms of teamwork were done in small games such as relay races, games of tig or when traveling in formations were signal's and voice communication helped organise people into such formation as v ,line or jagged. Team work is also there to help protect and maintain the safety of the kayakers. for example when somebody capsizes they may require assistance to get back on the kayak.

IN rock climbing communication can help save lives and complete the task safety whether this be freeclimbing out side or in a artificial wall like the ones i did. communication helps people move to areas were they can see or provide the opinion on the best moves or holds. other partners may be used to keep the rope tight acting as a weight on the other hand this is important as it slows the rate at which some body can fall reducing accidents and injuries. However this is not always needed as some indoor rock climbing have automatic counterweights in the rope which no longer require the use of a partner ,i would still recommend a partner as there insight can help better the activity through advice and the company they provide.

Reflection

team and group dynamics helped improve the quality of the activities. generally being around many people all doing the same thing inspires confidence and even so they them selves are wary of possible consequences such as falling into the water while kayaking due to some one bumping into you or just being too close. this is relative as being safe and precautious in the protective services reduces the risk to yourself and co-workers such as when using firearms or dangerous situations like housefires. being able to understand more then one form of communication also helps those who might be confused or don't know what is about to happen such as incoming boats or when to stop. this is good as in the protective services there is often times were hand gestures, radios or signs are used to inform the public, or comrades about plans ,issues actions about to be undertook. when comparing leadership and collaboration there are many similaties such as when traveling in formations a leader will decide the best one based on the situation and location such as smaller enclosed spaces a line formation. guidence in rock-climbing can shoe=w collaboration in the services such as firefighters guiding each other in low visibility.

some skills developed can be used inn the protective services .rock climbing builds up strength and endurance needed to climb for long periods of time and can develop the skills needed to guide or teach others . this helps rescue efforts as it is important to ensure the actions of the victim will not put anyone in risk of harm. Activities such as kayaking also come with licences that need renewing each year this helps enforce the law as if a person does not meet the requirements or are doing it in non lisced areas officers with these qualifications have the expertise to effectively uphold the law and make appropriate decisions based on the law.

 https://www.army.mod.uk/learn-and-explore/about-the-army/corps-regiments-and-units/army-adventurous-training-group/

the british army offers a range of training courses for many activities such as caving. parachuting or mountain climbing. these activities open up routes for specialised training, commissions and more money due to being more valuable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQjQSDQrvZA

different activates have different rules and safety requirements due to there location. most activities that are done outside can have a indoor counterpart .indoors often provides a safer environment with staff that know how to help and it is near roads and emergency rooms. the outside one are a lot harder often having more rules and precautions which are there to prevent accidents and make sure the people who are dedicated to the activity are safe if there efforts. for example some costal areas are not safe for water sport activities this could be due to strong currents or a risk of falling debris. this is why beaches and other places have unique flags to indicate where and when water sports are allowed. A grading system is also put in to place which helps people make judgement if they should be there this is especially important for free climbing as there skills match to that of the mountains difficulty. mountain sides are not all flat and strait up ther are corners and inclines which takes different techniques and skills to pass through.

when i went kayaking i had to adapt to being on the water . for example my sense of balance was different i had to focus to keep my self upright at all times while shifting my weight during paddling. i learned some tricks like keeping a wider sitting stance and paddling as close to the kayak to remain strait these helped as i become more confident and tried new skills like going backwords.

equipment for kayaking

kayak- there are lots to choose from based on personnel skills and what is comfortable

such as a sit on top ,sit below ,double or Canadian canoe to name a few. it is important to get the correct size and to maintain it to increase it life span this includes cleaning it after every use and having proper storage for it .

paddle-kayak paddles are double sided and it is important to find the correct length paddle this will make the task easier and will give more control over the kayak.

clothing- it is important to come in appropriate attire such as long sleeve shirts and comfy pants a change of cloths is good too as getting wet is inevitable. a woollen hat to keep your head warm helps as it keeps the rest warm .

Buoyancy aid- this help incase of going in the water it keeps you afloat and helps swimming.

helmet -in areas of shallow water or visible walls helmets protect your head if you fall in.

rock climbing

shoes there are special shoes which help grip the rock theses are good especially on more difficult rocks but normal trainers can also work if the climb is easier or if you are more comfortable

harness this connects you to the wall it has to be tight as so it does not fall off the walls it also connects you to the rope so.

clothing wise shorts and high mobility clothing this al lows for maximin movement to help reach the grips.if activities are done outside a gps can be used to show others your location or give first responders a better description of your loctaion there are cheaper solutions to this such as apps for your phone such as what 3 words.

when in the public services it is important for them to have complete knowledge and compentency to effectivly do there job. for example police use tasers, battons and even some times forearms it is important to use these effectivly ast the ca hurt people or temselves this is why extra training is done to get them certified .this protects the public.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtG_FAzb5bw

physical strength links to how a person preforms like there balance, endurance, and speed.these skills are there to help do the activities or work. these are critical in the public services there jobs are physically demanding forexample police have to deal with people who are drunk or on drugs they must restain them which can be difficult if they are strong or weigh a lot. another example would be fire fighters they were a lot of PPE aswell as carring lots of equipment.

All services have a physcal ofrefomance standard wether that be on the bleep test of doing a mile and a half run in a certain time.

to ensure acsess in to the services i would have to increase my cardio vascular endurance this can be done by taking part in exersises like running or cycling small exersises i can do every day on the way from college or to work. kayaking id good for cardio vascular it takes a lot of effort to wade through the water and to go fast. having good endurance allows to further along the canal. rock climbing improves strength as you are lifting body weight.

during my times of outdoor activities i had learnt to use many skills which aided in my qualification. communication was used during kayaking to help communicate what was needed to be done. this was verbal or signals. this was difficult especially when doing signals. remebering them then communicating with others and making sure we get into the correct positions. balancing on the kayaks was also a bit difficult at first it was only with some guidence from others and getting comfortable on the water.

during rock climbing we were given challenges such as sticking to one color hold to use. based on ur own skills or willingness we could chose how difficult we wanted this brought soft skill critical thinking in as we solved our isses by evaluating the situation befor and during the climb this allowed people to push there limits and go as high or as hard as they want.

with this these skills i have devloped can help in a career in the services such as the rock climbing . it devloped judgement and confidence which can help in the fire and rescue service of goinging into a more specifiic service the mountain and cave resuce. ressiliance is also important in the uniformed protective services, my time at kayaking as shown me that it takes practice and confidence to grow as a person and further devlop skills. this has allowed me to get two qualifications paddle start and paddle explore. this is especially important in the police service as there is lots of presure from the public and other police members constantly needing support and commitiment to the job.

there are lots of things to consider befor doing an activitie. there are safety considerations such as ; where you are going ,how you are going , with who are you going and when are you going . thesse are important as a risk assesment must be done befor every activitie even if it is a active one done seconds before.

a risk assesment is taking in all aspects so that a grade or level of danger. this means a dangerous or isolated location with no easy accsess for emergency services will be more on the danger side. in groups it would be wise to plan out who you go with as some people can put themselves in danger or others if they are not practicing safety. a good group should have lots of communication this would help solve issues and create a more trusting enviroment for each other. this will help with conflict resolution and the group will have more awerness for example kayaking in the liverpool water sports center my group was calm and followed instructions not going near each other or splashing in fear of retalliation the same could not be said for the other gruop as they imediatly started splashing others.

where ever a peson goes by thm selves or with others it is important to have a firts aid kit with pracrtice on how to use it.this helps the condition of the person until first respondes can get on scene.

a risk assesment is done on every action that will be taken during an activitie such as getting there getting on/off a bus. tha activitei any equipment being used then there are this loke its location, the weather and it closesnes to open public roads for an emergency response.

we did a risk assesment befor taking aprt in kayaking at wigan top lock. this assesment looked at all of the danger there and how we could avoid it. for example getting in and out of the water. we had to practice this there on the day this would pit it at possible likley hood of falling in but but the severity would be minor. we also had a person comein from river ad canal trust how showed us how to use equipment and to safely navigate the water if we fell in this reduced the risk of injury. this is not to say falling in was imposssible. i capsised both at the canal and livepool water sports center but because i was with others and wearing a boyancy aid the risk of harm was low while the likehood was almost certin to happen again.

risk assesments are important to alll the services for example the police will take an assesmnet befor raiding a house. an example woul be using a drone they found a trap at the stairs which would of swung a plank with nails at head hight. Fire fighters would use a risk assesment befor e putting out a fire they use the corect thing to extingish it and the danger to the public and surrounding areas. this sets up safe zones and riskd to there buildings.

emergency protocols are there to reduce damages done. they are planned out and practiced and shared between each service so that they all know there role before it happens. this makes them more effeicent and effectivesuch as in a natural disaster hospital staff will get the nessasery room and equipment ready while first rsponders communicate efforts between forces in order to get them the response they need for example the british srmy and air force doing emergency airlift during green lands volcanic eruption.

emergency preparness helps save time and lives as well as showig to the public the plans set to protect them. these plans can help towards skills in the protective services such as communication. during the response from the manchester arean attack btp and the greater manchester police had difficulty communicating the aproaches and responses this lead to slower response times and the public in more panic .this has been changed so that they will use the same metthods during emergency times.

some advanced techniques in kayaking

self rescue-this is when you get yourself back on to you boat after falling.this is done by flipping the boat back on to its corect side then using the opposite sides handel pulling you wieght back on to the kayak it is important to get the legs in the corect place firts then the rest as these will help stabalise the kayak.

weather interpitation-this is using the past few days weather and the current state of the weather to determind what will happens uch as if its been raining non stop for a few days one day will be dry as the clouds disapeared. this can help make descisions about the activities such as heavy rain will effect the speed and depth of water.or he accsessablitiy.

navigation skills can help in kyaking. for example when on the canal there are makers on the side which tell direction of travel and distance to citythese can be used to know direction of travel but canals still twist and bend through smaller towns so it is not perfect. using maps we can find out distances ,bearings and hight changes in elevation.thes can help estimate how long it takes to travel from one direction to another.for example hiking is 4 km per hour and an adittional minute fer 10meters in rise of elevation. this is only a rough estimate as it can change on terrain ,weather or availabilty of parths and roads.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cF0ovA3FtY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaqynPX3sPo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUHYtQR79Z4

one smart goal is to increase my cardiovascular endurance.this can be done by doing more cardio exersise such as swimming or running.this is important as all potective services have a minimum expected health such as the police which require a 5.6 on the beep test.how realsitic is this . i would need a long time to do this as results are slow but certain. this means i would have t apply multiple times each year improving upon my results this is crucial if i want to get into the armed forces were entry is harder then most services.

a second smart goal would be more vocal in communication. through my activities i only have been giving responses or taliking when it is requred of me .i can change this by taking more action and being more of a leader. this important as in the protective services good leaders will always have clear communication wth others increasing the effecincy and effectivness of the services.this is a definite improvement and can be started today such as working in groups with people i dont talk to or engaging with class and other clubs outside of college time.

to build up rescilliance. this is to be better and do more in the same amount of time for example police are shedualed for a certain amount of hours but that can always go over and be longer so for them it takes a lot of effort to get through a shift. being rescilliant wil help in my carrer as it will show higher rabking officer i can do more work and am willing to do so.

in this risk assesn=ment i have illistrated some of the key promblems wich threatens the wellbeing of the person. while there are many problems which can accour the severity is medium to low. this is due to the being preperation befor hand such as a small work shop we had. this outlined the rules of the canal and tha activities done there then there was information videos showing us how to use the equipment aswell as visual demonstraion. this will help lower the severity of any accidents as there is less decisoon making and all the people around know what needs to be done .for example as capzise. people around should help in any way of form such as holding there kayak then assisting them to turn it over.

rock climbing is a fun but dangerous activity especially when done outside. to help prevent hese issues i have highlighted in my risk asesment there are a few thing that can be done. for eample sore feet and joints. keeping limber and wearing cloths that have a lot of mobility in can help reduce stress on these points another way id to keep moving holding a position can make a person tierd and this makes moving the same. slipping or fallen poses as risk if outside climbing. so it is important that people know where you are going and that you have an emergency response plan thought out and is practical.

the rpoe and harness can cause soreness or even burn in the worst situation, this is why wehen i went rock climbing the instructors assisted us with the harnes and we only used the rope when repelling down the wall this stopes from any friction burns or the material moving causing sorenes.

when i went rock clm=imbing the instructors helped us in the start. the used the walls to gain our trust and help us get cnfidence on the smaller more easy walls befor moving on to the taller and more complicated walls . i feel like tis helped as it allowed us to have the quick exerience we needed berfor putting ourself out there. for example we were given the chance to climb taler walls, start on the corner or even do an inclined wall with a counter weight thus removng the instructor from the climbing

there are many things which may prohibit or limit the amount of time spent on an activitie.

funding some people may need more money to spend on the activite this can reduce them to sparse goings or even not allowing them to go at all.

availability. people can live in palces with out these facilities and require travel this can be quite far or only opend seasonaly for example kayaks only being rented during summer or rock climbig places only being open during working hours. there is also the availability of equipment. for exampl kayaks are quite expensive and would need a trailer to transpor them aswell as any additions such as paddles seats and cleaning supplies.
