Above the town a starry sky is represented , the protagonist of the composition. The sky is simultaneously realistic and symbolic. The sky is dominated by the very bright crescent of the Moon and the planet Venus, almost in the center of the representation. Since Venus is also called the Morning Star, we know that dawn is about to arrive.
Acting as a connection between the earthly and celestial parts, there is the large cypress, represented much larger than it actually was. It should be noted that the cypress is usually a plant associated with death. The cypress, although clearly a plant, is represented almost like a flame.
Despite being a representation of something real, the composition is highly symbolic: it represents the artist's restlessness .
