At the beginning of each school year, a speech language and hearing screening is administered to children enrolled in our preschool classrooms. These screenings are administered to determine if children need any follow up or intervention for communication skills or hearing.
Since children will be attending school virtually at least until the end of September, screenings cannot take place in person as would be typical in any other school year.
A speech language pathologist will be in contact with your child's teacher to talk about each child's communication development. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any concerns about your child's speech or language development.

Here are some low-prep and low cost ideas on how to incorporate learning at home with, you guessed it, APPLES!
Materials:
Variety of apples (granny smith, gala, fuji etc.)
tempera paint
paper
Apple Math: Sort them by color, variety (granny smith, fuji, gala) and size. Count how many of each color/kind/size you have and how many there are in all. You could also make patterns with them or create a real graph using the apples as a visual. If you have an older preschooler you could start to model addition and subtraction story problems with them. There are so many possibilities!
Apple Art: Cut an apple in half horizontally so that you have two equal parts. You should see that in the center of the apple there is a star. Use a large piece of paper and tempera paint. Have kids stamp paint with the apples and create their own apple art.
Apple Taste Test: Grab a few different kinds of apples such as granny smith, gala or honey crisp, and taste test each one. Discuss the similarities and differences and see if there is a favorite in the bunch. Extend this activity by discussing the 5 Senses (see, feel, listen, smell and taste) and using each sense to examine the apple.
*These fun activities and many more were adapted from*
https://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/september-preschool-activities-and-fun-things-to-do-with-kids

September is childhood obesity awareness month. It is so important now, more than ever, to help ensure that our kids are moving. With most of us staying inside and having less access to playgrounds and in-person school, we have to find new ways to help our kids stay active. Kids who move their bodies show an increase in their academic performance and a decrease in behavioral issues.

The Center for Disease Control recommends that all kids, starting at three years old, participate in 60 minutes of movement daily. That might seem like a lot, but between the Mission2Move program that kids are receiving in their preschool classroom and a few tips below, you will be able to make the 60 minutes! Did you know that only 1 in 5 kids actually receives 60 minutes of movements a day?

Tips to get kids moving at home:

Turn cleaning up into a fun activity where all kids can get involved- an opportunity for them to move their bodies.

Play Mission2Move's song "Body Boogie," your kids will know it from school, and it's a great addition to your bedtime or wake up routine.
Activity 4: Create a Pretend Play Prop Box for your Child

Young children learn by imagining and doing. Have you ever watched your child pick up a stone and pretend it is a zooming car, or hop a Lego across the table as if it were a person or a bunny? Your child is using an object to represent something else while giving it action and motion. But this pretend play is not as simple as it may seem. The process of pretending builds skills in many essential developmental areas, including language, social emotional, and thinking skills.

Consider creating a prop box with objects to spark your preschooler's imagination. When choosing items, make sure that they are safe for your child to use (Ex. Avoid items that are a choking hazard or have sharp edges) and provide supervision. You might include:

Large plastic crates, cardboard blocks, or a large, empty box for creating a "home"

Old clothes, shoes, backpacks, hats

Old telephones, phone books, magazines

Cooking utensils, dishes, plastic food containers, table napkins, silk flowers

Stuffed animals and dolls of all sizes

Fabric pieces, blankets, or old sheets for making costumes or a fort

Theme-appropriate materials such as postcards, used plane tickets, and photos for a pretend vacation trip

Coloring and drawing materials

For more information about pretend play and skill development, please read the full article from Scholastic:

https://www.scholastic.com/parents/kids-activities-and-printables/activities-for-kids/arts-and-craft-ideas/importance-pretend-play.html

Topic 4: Making the Most of Playtime

So what can you do to make the most of your child’s play time? Check out the following tips from The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning:

-Follow Your Child’s Lead: See what your child chooses to do with a toy and support their creativity.

-Go Slowly: It's great to show your child how a toy works, but try to hold off on "doing it for him/her" every time. You can begin something, such as stacking one block on another, and then encourage your child to give it a try.

-Read Your Child’s Signals: Reading your child’s signals (both verbal and nonverbal) can give you insight into what activities your child prefers. Reading the signals that come before a tantrum help you know when to jump in or change to a new activity.

-Look at Your Play Space: Is the area where you play child friendly and child-safe? Is there too much noise or other distractions? Is the area safe to explore? Is this a good place for the activity you've chosen, such as running, throwing balls, or painting?

-Play It Again, Sam: While doing things over and over again is not necessarily thrilling for Mom and Dad, it is for young children. They are practicing in order to master a challenge. And when your child can do it “all by myself!” he/she is rewarded with a powerful sense of his/her own skills and abilities—the confidence that he/she is a smart and successful being (Source).
