Today, I found myself constantly looking on my phone for something to do. Due to there not being anything fun to do on my phone, I tend to use my phone significantly less now. I have forced myself to use this extra time I have to become more creative. So far the activities I have picked up are relearning Spanish, how to play the piano, and I started to exercise. I have discovered that I enjoy playing the piano. The piano helps me express my love for music while at the same time it helps me rewind and relax. I also like trying to play popular TV shows theme song/music. As of today, I am learning the intro to the TV show The Office. This song is fairly easy to memorize, however, I am having trouble being able to alternate hands while playing. To solve this I have downloaded an app called flow key in order to provide exercises to help me coordinate my hands.

Today is difficult for me. I feel a disconnect from my friends and I have a huge case of F. O. M. O. I feel like I am missing out on fun activities that my friends could be doing. I also feel left out and in the dark. My friends could be trying to contact me through snapchat or Instagram to hang out but I am not able to see it. However, on the bright side, I feel more focused and more relaxed without the distraction of social media. The only thing stressing me out right now is all the snap streaks that I am losing. I also keep finding myself glancing down at my phone hoping to see a social media notification, but they never come. The thing that keeps happening to me that I am starting to find funny is that everytime in the room with someone and their snapchat notification goes off, I naturally look at my phone. My body is still learning to not react to those sounds.

I find myself bored and searching for things to do on my phone to pass the time. I have started downloading more apps to keep myself occupied. The entertainment apps i have downloaded include; Fortnite, subway surfer, word cookies, Fun run two, two for two, Asphalt 9, and ball shooter. My favorite game right now is subway surfer, it makes me react fast to the unpredictable situations. On another note, I also noticed that I really never needed people’s phone numbers until now. I always relied on sc to get in contact with my friends. However, now when I need help I have to jump through hoops to find their number. This is frustrating me because I am having to do so much more effort to find the people in person to get their number or ask others if they have it. Using snapchat for these types of situations is so much easier. Being a millennial so HARD!!!

Today was very Hard for me b/c everyone around me is constantly on social media. I was tempted to download sc to see what the newest trend was. I felt like my peers were unknowingly peer pressuring me to get sc back b/c they kept snapping pictures of my and showing me new funny videos. On the bright side, I finally found a new Netflix show to keep me occupied in my free time (Sherlock Holmes). I have always heard people talk about this show but I never got around to watching it until now. Also, as a result of me not being on my phone a much, when I get bored I play the piano, play subway surfer, study, and clean up around my the house. I started cleaning so much my sisters started teasing me and calling me Cinderella. Their teasing did not stop there. They would consistently send me memes of people cleaning, it became annoying really fast.

Over the course of this week, I have realized that my phone battery last 2x longer. By not using social media throughout the day, I do not have the need to constantly be on and check my phone. with the extra battery life, I am able to watch more Netflix, listen to music, and read “The Fault in our Stars” ebooks that I have on my mobile phone. Also, I downloaded multiple different types of brain games to better the health of my brain. My two favorite brain game i have on my phone is word cookies and game dots. The game word cookies is helping expand my vocabulary as for the game dots is teaching me strategy. When I play these games, I feel accomplished after playing these brain games, they allow me to distract myself from things around me, but at the same time earn and grow as a person.

Day 6, I'M SO BORED! The only thing I can do is watch Netflix and play games b/c I don’t have my friends phone #’s. SnapChat was the main way I stayed connected to them. Not being connected to SnapChat is putting a strain on my social life. People are not inviting me to hangout as much and it seems like they are being standoffish. I guess the up side to this is I can now finish multiple seasons of a new Netflix show in one sitting :) Day 7, nothing has changed from yesterday, I am still watching Netflix. However, I did play the piano today and finished studying for my literature test next week. Also, I wasn’t on my phone as much as yesterday, so I didn’t really think about social media. I was too busy watching football and sleeping! I’m still very excited to get social media tomorrow and see everything I have missed!

The Mutual Influence of Media Selectivity and Media Effects and Their Impact on Individual Behavior and Social Identity

https://academic.oup.com/ct/article-abstract/17/3/281/4098761
The article “The Mutual Influence of Media selectivity and Media Effects and Their Impact on Individual Behavior and Social Identity” by Michael D, Slater, touches on how things someone sees on social media can affect their actions and how they view themselves. The article says this can all be explained by the theory of mutually reinforcing spirals. This theory talks about how people are influenced by the content they are exposed to. This type of advertising may not be intentional, but it still happened. Some ways social media can influence younger adolescents is with clothes, dances, or any other trends. When malleable minds see models on Instagram or other social media they could be influenced to dress a certain way or look a certain way. This all impacts the child’s development of their personal Identity. Also, social media's influence can affect other aspects of someone's lifestyle; such as religion and politics. The article also talks about how the use of social media also creates a feedback loop. This feedback loop is making kids and even adults seek recognition to get comments or likes. This form of gratification can cause people to do crazy things to obtain the attention needed to get likes. Once someone becomes popular on social media others are more likely to follow their trend. As a result, the theory of mutually reinforcing spirals continues. These spirals can eventually cultivate how someone’s mind works and how they decide to look and live their life. The rapper and music producer, Kanye West had an idea that involved the gratification that is obtained by the amount likes, comments, or the number of followers one has. His idea was to have a social media setting available to turn off these functions. The reason Kanye West said this was because he felt that his self-worth was being judged by the number of followers or likes he got on his post.
Slater, and Michael D. “Reinforcing Spirals: The Mutual Influence of Media Selectivity and Media Effects and Their Impact on Individual Behavior and Social Identity.” OUP Academic, Oxford University Press, 25 July 2007, academic.oup.com/ct/article-abstract/17/3/281/4098761.

Teenagers and Social Media by Ellen Niemer

https://stillwaterschools.org/sites/default/files/public/downloads/news/social_media.pdf
The article talks about all the many factors that play a part in the determination of how great of an impact social media has on their life. The researcher, Amanda Lenhart of the Pew Research Center in 2009 did a study on how gender and age played a huge part in their use of social media. The research stats “ 86 percent of 15- to 17-year-old girls, 69 percent of 15- to 17-year-old boys, 38 percent of 12- to 14-year-olds” use social media. This led to the question of how do teens communicate? I found out that 51% of teens that have a cell phone use social media as their main source of communication. I ran into this issue when I was doing my one-week social media cleans. The article also said 42% of teens use sites like Instagram and facebooks in order to exchange messages on a daily basis. This increase in social media usage has led to the big question of, “Is Social Media Good or Bad”? A professor at California State University, Dominguez, Larry Rosen who specializes in the psychology of technology did a research on this topic. Larry states, “From my research and that of others I see the overall effect [of social media on teens] as both good and bad,” he states. “Some of our research shows, for example, that more Facebook activity is related to more signs of certain psychiatric disorders such as narcissism, while the same research shows that having more friends on Facebook predicts lower depression. Other studies out of our lab show that using Facebook helps teens practice and learn how to be empathic in the real world. And still, other work shows that shy teens are assisted in learning communication skills by practicing online. The bottom line is that we are just now starting to see both the good and the bad.” From Larry’s study, he believes that although there are many negative to social media there are more positives. However, it is still a good idea to use social media in moderation and take breaks from time to time.

Teenagers and Social Media by Ellen Niemer. stillwaterschools.org/sites/default/files/public/downloads/news/social_media.pdf.

The Pros and Cons of Teens on Social Media

http://www.phonesheriff.com/blog/the-pros-and-cons-of-teens-on-social-media/
There has been a rise a rise in the use of social media platform. Teenagers are the main reason for this sudden rise of social media, With many teen using outlets such as, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, and instagram. The use of these information outlets has some pros and cons on the way people view things. Some of the pros consist of people becoming more informed on current affairs. Teenagers are now able easily access information about what is going on in there city, school, or even their neighborhood. Along with that it has become easier to carry out research work. Social media is a great source of knowledge into others cultures and can act as a study tool. Also, Social media can be used to assist in getting a job. You can now apply to some jobs by using social media, and you can find many job opportunities that are unique to your social media search. Although there are positives to social media, there are also just as many negatives. Some cons of social media use consist of exposure to cyber bullying ,the disclosing of too much personal information, and a decrease in overall productivity levels. When it comes to cyber bullying, everyone with social media can become a target. It is common for people with disabilities to be attacked or isolate for what makes them different. Some forms of Cyberbullying consist of memes, negative parody videos, and the basic name calling. Also, when people spend their time on social media they are cutting out other activities; such as studying, learning a new skill, or interacting face to face with others. This can all lead to the destruction of someone's social skills and how they interact with others. More over, people that use social media can unknowingly disclose personal information. The personal information that the person puts out there, makes a privacy concern. The information someone puts out on the internet can make it easy for people to stalk others and can also lead to cyber bullying.
“The Pros and Cons of Teens on Social Media.” PhoneSheriff, www.phonesheriff.com/blog/the-pros-and-cons-of-teens-on-social-media/.

Global social media research summary 2018

https://www.smartinsights.com/social-media-marketing/social-media-strategy/new-global-social-media-research/
This article does not only talk about the main social media outlets such as Instagram and snapchat. However, this research article touches on social media as a whole. This article acts as a summary of social media use globally. for instance, one research topic that the articles speak about is, the number of internet users worldwide in 2018. The number of people that use the internet is 4.021 billion people! this number increases by seven percent of the population every year. The article also mentions the amount of social media users worldwide in 2018. there were an amazing 3.196 billion people that participated in the use of social media. This number increased by thirteen percent every year. This number surprised me because I assumed that way more people used social media in 2018. Along with that, the number of people who use cell phones in 2018 is 5.135 billion. The number of people with cell phones only increases by four percent every year. This has the lowest percent of increase out of the three facts I have presented. This leads me to infer that cellphones might go obsolete sometime in the future. This may be because of new technology such as laptops that can also act as a phone. On another note, social media is increasing every year. this year (2018), in the United Kindom nineteen percent of people thirteen years old and over, use facebook, sixty percent used Twitter, fifty-one percent used Instagram, and fifty percent used snap chat as their preferred form of social media. This data shows the preferred social media outlets in the United Kingdom.
“Global Social Media Research Summary 2018.” Smart Insights, Smart Insights, 26 Nov. 2018, www.smartinsights.com/social-media-marketing/social-media-strategy/new-global-social-media-research/.
