Quote 1 I related most to quote one. As a kid, when I first learned how to write my name I'd write it everywhere (walls, pictures, things in my room). My dad would get mad, however my mom didn't mind because she wanted to support my developing writing skills.

I have seen quote one in practice in my experience babysitting. One of the boys I watch was constantly writing and drawing everywhere and once he went to school he stepped back. I’m not sure if it is because of the amount he needed to write once in school or a raised affective filter from school. In my philosophy I hope to shape students passions and use them as strengths when working towards the curriculum.

I like quote number three because students need to form a foundation of writing skills in order to work on their writing across cirriculum. After students begin to write more, teachers can see what the students need to work on while growing their writing and academic skills. It’s almost like putting together a puzzle because once students begin to write, they start to grow their learning as a whole.

Students, at all ages, are capable of so much. They desire the need to learn. As a preschool teacher assistant I see children from as young as 18 months wanting to write, whether it is drawing a picture or writing their name. When students enter kindergarten and have the opportunity to write they are excited. Writing through pictures or words enables children to present their knowledge, feel important, and most importantly make their mark!

In my class the students beg for free writing time, when they have time to share stories, ideas, or issues in their writing notebook. During these types of activities the students can freely express themselves.

I recently read Stephen King's memoir, "On Writing." He suggests that if someone wants to become a successful writer (at any level), they must read and write constantly. Becoming a good writer takes time, and as such, teaching writing takes time. Once skills are taught, students need time to use the skills before they are ready to accept more.

I agree with quote 1 and 2 fully, and quote 3 to a certain extent. However, I especially enjoyed the first quote because I can relate to it. All people, no matter how small have a desire to communicate. I found it very clever of the author of this quote to compare that desire to a child's first desires to write. I agree. I have never met a child who did not scribble "words" or try to write through pictures in some way.

My writing skills improved drastically my senior year of college when I had a professor take the time to try multiple strategies and assessments of my work. If it took myself almost 20 years of education to achieve that, I could only imagine an ELL's struggles.
