Unfortunately, the plays fields aren't level. Minorities still are being discriminated against, no matter what class you are in. The comic strip below explains what I mean by this.

The Green light vs. the Valley of Ashes

In The Great Gatsby, The green light on Daisy's dock symbolizes hope, and to ultimately achieve the goal of getting daisy. To me this is a symbol of what the American Dream should be. On the contrary, the valley of ashes is a symbol of what the American Dream is and what the wealthy has done. This is because the valley of ashes symbolizes the poor, because it comes from the pursuit of wealth and the lower class not being able to keep up.

The American Dream then vs. now?

Based off of the definition above, the principal of the American Dream has remained the same. The idea that everybody has equal opportunities, to reach their own specific dream or goal. Does this actually happen? I don't believe so, because we still face many discriminatory issues across the board. Race, Gender, and sexual orientation are among the biggest factors of discrimination today. Although things have gotten better from the 90's version of the American Dream, we still face issues based off of discrimination.
