Leadership At It's Core

It all begins with the dynamic of family. The ranking between siblings, me being the eldest. The ranking between parent and child. Then the dynamic between everyone. Leaders are developed in this process. The traits and behaviors in a family dynamic are at their most true. "Behind closed doors" is a saying that bears the functions of leadership between a parent and a child, and the leadership that is build between the eldest (myself) and my siblings. This dynamic can change if/when someone moves up in socioeconomic status, such as the youngest on the far left. Yet the early integrated levels of leadership have been so deeply ingrained that he knows better when older brother steps up.

Behind the professional look I am creating dyadic linkages with people all over the world. In the business world this is called "Networking". The leader-member exchange is crucial to developing bonds between a boss and their subordinates. In this image is myself and the Reach Digital team at my going away dinner in Cape Town, South Africa last summer where I completed a 4-month business internship. The links I made were priceless and forever instill value to networking and building existing and evolving relationships with people from all around the world.

What I show to the business world: Self-aware and a readiness to succeed. "Saving Face" is a proper insight into how many cultures depend on this tactic to maintain dignity and preserve reputation. This bears a different type and amount of weight from person and business lives. In personal, this can mean saving oneself from humiliation of what a potential partner might think so we save face by preoccupying ourselves with a project - ourselves; to be the best possible self for that person. In business the face-saving shifts from individual face to include the business or organization. We represent whichever business we work for. What we bring to the table is also in respect to how a client or customer may think and we sell ourselves by mirroring what the business or organization wishes us to project.

My personal leadership vision is to keep broadening my horizons by meeting new people and learning about their lives, culture, race, religion, sexual orientation, and whatever else makes who they are. I am constantly analyzing people and the way they act. Hand movements, eye movements, stance, etc.

Body language is stored and remembered and used to specifically, and as casually as possible, implement structure for a leader-member exchange. I believe that this structure is a continuous improvement from scratch and cannot begin without knowing how someone will react.

My vision for the future to finish at Royal Roads, move on to UVIC in the Masters of Global Business program that is 1 year divided into 3 sections: Victoria, Taiwan, and Austria. This goal has become a truth to me within the past 2 months and I am going to pursue it in September of next year. This finished my time at Royal Roads 1 year early, but a masters program begins 1 year early. Win-win.

My vision extends beyond the 4 walls of an educational institution. I wish to work in agribusiness in Africa. Build a home for myself with borax-treated bamboo in sub-Saharan Africa while helping to develop an innovative system that will transform townships with bamboo homes that will help vent, keep heat in, and cool homes, as a replacement to their shacks made of scrap material. This is my vision.

The end and ultimate goal is to work at the World Trade Organization in whatever capacity that I can. I believe that my leadership is meant to be used in this role, to help protect the world with visionary establishments.

The ultimate quote that I live by is, "Your life is a series of rooms. Who you share a room with makes up what your life becomes." This helps me build strong dyads, weeding out those that are a liability to themselves and myself. Creating powerful groups that will change the way the world functions. Because that is what leadership is all about. Not just saying. But doing.

Goal 1: Complete Royal Roads and UVIC

to reach this goal I need to complete each course in the program at Royal Roads with at least a B average in completion. This will provide me a slot with UVIC's Master of Global Business Program. This program takes me 4 months at University of Victoria, 4 months in Taiwan at Sun Yat Sen University, and 4 months in Austria at Johannes Kepler University, totaling 1 year to complete.

Saving money or getting an extension on my student line of credit, and/or applying for scholarships and bursaries.

The benefit for myself is the integration into a higher learning experience and providing deeper skills for employers

Goal 2: Get a job at an agribusiness in Africa

One company in particular is Africa Plantation Capital (APC), a branch of Asian Plantation Capital (APC) that produces a number of raw material, but my core focus is on sustainable and endless renewable resources such as the newly naturally treated borax-treated bamboo.

Learn basic Swahili

The benefit for myself is a hands-on job that I can finally truly apply all my vocational knowledge into a real-life scenario, providing fresh hands and ideas to an employer.

What will change once I reach these goals?
Everything will change. The experiences I have now are vastly different than the career bubble.

Taking STNL422 with me
The practical and vocational knowledge learning in this course in a piston in a large engine of skills. Although I have already had a leadership course before, doing a project with an organization is key to being able to adapt to a reality when we have to go out into the world and integrate ourselves. There is a serious problem with those that cannot seem to do this. There is sheer lack of confidence and/or actual practical knowledge and skills that can be used on entry into business. I know I am capable of this, have the confidence and tenacity to grease my engine of skills to whichever avenue necessary.
