As opposed to Patriotism which is sort of the more positive counterpart of Nationalism. Patriotism is the ideal, because Patriotism is pride in one’s country, and it is typically used in the context of “be patriotic, do your civil duty of voting”. However, when I think of Nationalism, I think of Hitler’s rise to power in Germany, his speeches about Germany being the superior blood and the Aryan race being above all, and also Japan’s war crimes in Nanjing. They were all caused due to Nationalism. Nationalism and Patriotism are two sides of the same coin, and there’s a thin line between them, especially from how easily Patriotism can turn to Nationalism when things start to go south in a country.

Nationalism is excessive loyalty and devotion to one's country and leader. Nationalists are very defensive when it comes to justifying that their country and leader are superior and will almost go to any extent. Often tend to impose racist and xenophobic values towards the country’s people if the nationalist sees them to be not fit to live in their country because “it might be too good for them”.
