CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

As all of us have experienced the phase of childhood. Everyone has their own perspectives according to the traditions and rituals they grew up in. Many of us come from diverse cultures so we have different views. If I talk about mine culture, I come from India, having the Indian traditions, I am having a lot of knowledge in this regard and I am here to get more about the other cultures too. So, talking about my society, the knowledge of growth and development of child is deeply rooted. Although there are things with whom I came here, some of them I am mentioning according to my own personal experience. These aspects will be discussed further. First, I want to talk about the family system. In India, mostly there are joint families, and children learn how to cooperate and maintain the relationships in the life by living in this environment. Not only that, youngsters also came to know about their multiple generations and civilization. Families has the get together at festivals that are educational and have cultural importance. Children have the chance to learn about history and religious values. So, families play a significant role in a child’s growth. Secondly, the educational system is incredibly good in my home country. Institutes play a key role in the child’s development of the brain and health. They have special arrangements for physical wellbeing and mental health like meditation, yoga, outdoor as well as indoor games to sharpen memory and to remain fit. Schools also give knowledge about spiritual thoughts and dedicate time daily before each day. Lastly, India is the diverse country, and it does practices for the welfare of the coming generation for the sake of the future.

Yes sure! Everyone has expectations before starting a new job. Me too having some believes regarding this. There are many more which are still pending to complete. I came here to this program to fulfill all the these to be succeed in my life desires. There are many more things to know to be with the children. There are many theories still to learn for the child's allover development. As per my perspective, there is a need to learn about psychology, sociology, intellectual skills, critical thinking, nutritional value per person, emotional perspective, social norms, parenting and so on. I am hoping for the best for my future as well for the little ones to be professional in the rest of their life by interpreting the theories in this program for the sake of the upcoming future.

#EL121 #ROPjournal

Everyone has their own identity in terms of intelligence and after the assessment, came up with my own personal intelligence in comparison with the theory of Howard Gardner. In his theory of multiple intelligences, he has the wider implications for understanding and navigating life. Here, I am connecting his theory to my personal experience. It is the common feature that everyone has the diversity of abilities. It recognizes the ability of people to have different talents and skills whether they are artistic, linguistic, mathematical, interpersonal, and so on. God has sent everyone to this life having own personality and specialty. Talking about myself, I am better in logico-mathematical, bodily-kinaesthetic and spatial intelligences as comparison with the result of the assessment. If we understand our intelligence, we can guide our Carrer choices and it would be helpful for the growth and development of the child. In short, we can say that the theory of Howard Gardner of multiple intelligences approaches learning and makes us unique.

In terms of Piaget's theory, Howard Gardner challenges him on his theory. Gardner comes up with the idea of continuous developmental psychologist while others focus on the discontinuous development.

They both focus on the influential theories in the fields of psychology and education, but they focus on the different aspects of human development. These both theories are distinct significantly in their primary focus and scope. Gardner's theory centers on the diversity of human intelligence whereas Piaget's theory focuses on the cognitive development of children. We can learn different things from both theories like they provide the valuable frameworks for self-awareness, learning, career choices, and problem-solving. They can be helpful in various aspects of life whether it is personal or professional.

#EL121 #ROPjournal

SOCIO-CULTURE THEORISTS

There is one similarity between the thoughts of Loris Malaguzzi and Lev Vygotsky is that they both emphasize social interaction but the diverge is that the latter theorist focuses on social interaction also, but the former theorist not only focuses on the social interactions but also on the child's ability to explore the environment.

According to Loris Malaguzzi, a child as rich in potential, rather than an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge and customs; environment or educator is third teacher of children. I agree with him. I remember that when I was in my childhood, there were a number of children like me who had potential to explore new things without any guidance, just by seeing and touching things along with listening. For example, one day one of my art teachers gave me a project about Buddhism and told nothing about what student can do or use in this painting project. She only told all students to make it on their own and when the teacher saw the different projects, she was astonished and glad to see all these as each student used a different technique. So, now I feel that if the teacher talked about the specific technique and tools, no one could use their own creativity and pressurize their mind to think deeper, and all the projects would be the same. As a result, society as well as tutors should encourage children to explore and experience things on their own to make it clearer and to remember it for the long run as it is also mentioned in the theory that one can learn through touching, moving, listening, seeing, and hearing.

According to Lev Vygotsky, there are a number of things involved in children's development like their culture, language, independent potential and knowledge which is gained from others. By reading his theory, I can also relate it to my own childhood. If I talk about my traditional culture and language, it really emphasizes on me how I speak or communicate with others and how to think. So, cultural tradition and language played a vital role in one's personal and cognitive development. He mainly focuses on the learner's capacity to achieve the goal with the guidance. I can relate my past days with his theory. I can understand such views as I remember that I had confusion about choosing the stream for my secondary education. So, I put numerous questions about its scope and finally after a few days, I took the decision to do further study in it by getting help from other people such as teachers, parents, and adults because they had practical experience regarding this. Apart from this, every child has different capabilities and different problems which a person can solve according to the children's understanding. For instance, I love to do painting but in my childhood time, I found it difficult to understand different tools and mediums in comparison with others who had no interest. So, teachers spent more time on them and used different techniques to teach them. So, this is clear from this example that everybody has their own level of support. These are the thoughts which I really connect with my own life by reading the views of Lee Vygotsky.

#EL121 #ROPjournal

Although there are many factors that are identified in the Root's article that affect the first nation people in Canada negatively, I think that colonialism is the one which is on the top of the row to talk about. Colonization occurred throughout the history, and it is a shared history in Canada too. There are many historical events like residential schools, loss of traditional land and language and cultural identity and so on. These factors may affect the family structure, environment, relationships, language, social and economic challenges, cultural identity and so on. Indigenous families and children have to suffer a lot due the practices of these factors. The traditional indigenous philosophy MSIT No' Kmaq, which values the community, share-caregiving, and connection to the land are still believed in and practiced today, as shown in Indigenous Families: Fostering Attachment our Way (Roots, 2018). Not only this, but another problem is also about the resilience from which indigenous people have suffer. All these factors may impact the mindset of the individuals- mentally as well as physically- which further leads to the well-being of the people. I think that we collectively must do various deeds in support of these people for the development of the first nation children and their communities. It is our responsibility for the sake of the next generation so that they do not have to suffer from these challenges. In the article also, it has mentioned to resolve the feelings of bitterness and anger and pass onto our children only feelings of hope (Battistet,2018). Moreover, many efforts have been made in Canada to overcome the colonialism. For example, Truth and Reconciliation Day to heal the wound of the past. Hence, I think that we all to participate actively in each and every event so as to heal the wounds of the indigenous people.

#EL121 #ROPjournal

Explaining further to my factors which I have mentioned above, I would like to mention the historical events that affect growth of children and bonds with their families that were not developed healthy. Firstly, the colonization, which means that in the past, residential schools were built and owing to that, children were forcefully migrated from their families to schools. This factor firstly breaks the emotional bond between children and families and further it also left emotional trauma in further generation's families that they were afraid to get separated from their children and that is why they would be not able to create a secure attachment with them. And hence it created chronic stress, depression, and other mental related problems in both which affected overall growth of children. Secondly, economic, and social disparities, which mean some of first nation families didn't get good education, health facilities, employment opportunities due to which they were not able to provide a healthy life to their children which become a cause poor development of children and emotional detachment of children with families as they were not getting healthy lifestyle from their parents. Thirdly, cultural, and social disconnections, which mean first nation communities also faced some disconnection from their cultural practices and there was suppression of their indigenous languages which made children not to realize their own culture identity and language. And it directly led to culture disconnection and affected social bonds between people or community.

#EL121 #ROPjournal4
