I think as a high school student, a national bank would be the smartest choice just because most teenagers don’t have to deal with any sort of financing. A national bank can provide you with a checking and savings account which is all one would need at this age in my opinion. After graduating college, the best type of bank to use would be a credit union if one did not stay with their national bank (because that would be good too). Credit unions allow you to set up money market and CD accounts on top of your checking and savings (and an IRA account further down the road). These sorts of accounts require a lot of responsibility because you have to keep up with paying monthly rates and fees, which would be good experience for a new adult. Personally, I’m probably going to continue to use my national bank even after college to pay off my loans and keep a stable bank account.
