Alex Elle said that “It’s never too late to start over. If you weren’t happy with yesterday, try something different today. Don’t stay stuck” . Nowadays, percentage of UMP students that came late to class increase dramatically. Generally speaking, this situation is caused by three main reasons, which are students does not take responsibility of their self, student’s attitude on challenging the instructor’s authority and students who do not perceive the beginning of class as important.

The first and immediate cause of students came in late into class is students do not take responsibility of their self, because of the fact that students live far away from their parents. As a result, nobody is there to take care of students well-being and usually their roommate’s is allocated in different faculty, so the timetable of classes differ. Furthermore, students love to stay up and go to bed late, on account of students frequently waste their time doing useless activities. Most of them take a nap in the evening and couldn’t sleep at night. Procrastination is the thief of time. Most students do their assignment last minute since they need to finish their assignment before they come to class. According to this, it will be one of the main factor, on why students came late to class.

Another is, students came in late to class because they were trying to challenge the instructor’s authority. Due to the physical state of the instructor who are young or a female or one of the minorities, students know they will be forgiven easily. Other than that, is to test the instructor or challenges his or her authority such as taking advantage of them and judging the instructor power by their way of communicating, gesture and body language. By this, student will judge and look down on the lecturer authorities and assume that the lecturer will tolerate to them. They also do this owing to think that it’s cool to break the rules by attending class late. Thus, tendency of latecomers will rise as a result of peer pressure.

Moreover, students do not perceive the beginning of class as important. For example, they expect the lecturer to revise their last learning session in the beginning of class as petty. This is because they do not take things seriously. In behalf of, no heavy punishment was given. In this case, student who came late still get to sign their attendance and no mark were deducted or any punishment were given to them. Hence, students feel that it’s okay to skip the beginning of class. Thanks to that, most of them decided to wake up late in the morning and take their deliberate time to prepare for class. This could result in an increase in number of latecomers.

In conclusion, students who does not take responsibility of their self, tries to challenge the instructor’s authority and do not perceive the beginning of class as important are the major causes of student arriving late to class. Consequently, the students who came late to class can cause their academic performance to drop and would increase in chance of getting expel at the same time. If student change their attitude by always being punctual, UMP can achieve its main objective which is to generate successful students.
