The Challenge Case ended with the suggestion that Mr Adkins might be CEO after Virginia Rometty.

But it also said he's been with the company for 30+ years. That would put him in his late 50s or possibly early 60s. Is it actually likely that he'd become CEO one day? I don't think so and that led me to do some research.

Her appointment was in 2012. Rodney Adkins retired a polite 2 years later. Which to me seems just long enough to transition someone else into his role and not look like he's leaving explicitly because he didn't get into the CEO position. Plus, he served that company well and with distinction. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
