Evangelicalism emphasized free will and shared revolutionary ideals that everyone is equal in the eyes of God. As a result, women, lower classmen and Africans  felt empowered to start their own freedom movements.

  • Presbyterian Minister that conducted emotional revival meetings that stressed conversion rather than doctrine and appealed to all classes
  • Central message was that “God has made man a moral free agent who could choose salvation.” 
  • Finney’s wife and other women carried the Christian message to the wives of the unconverted, set up Sunday schools for poor children, and formed the Female Charitable Society challenging the traditional roles of women in religion.
