Why did you choose this image? How does the image represent the pillar?

This image is the most commonly used symbol of Islam and the faith as a whole.
Why is the practice of this pillar important to Islam?
This practice is important to Islam because it is how one becomes a Muslim - by stating that they will only believe in Allah and also that Muhammad is the prophet of Allah.
Given the practice and meaning of Faith, how might it increase literacy and importance of writing?
Much of faith has to do with reciting prayers. This means that people on a daily basis would have to open up the Qur'an and read from it, meaning the literacy probably went up.

Why did you choose this image? How does the image represent the pillar?
This is an image of a Muslim praying in a traditional way, in white clothing, probably facing toward Mecca. This represents the pillar because Muslims are supposed to pray like this five times a day.
Why is the practice of this pillar important to Islam?
This practice is important to Islam because it offers them a connection to God. In addition, when people are praying at Mecca, it offers a sense of equality because everybody is wearing the same clothes and praying the same way.
In order to pray five times a day what would you need to know? How would you figure this out?
In order to pray five times a day, you would need to know where Mecca is. This is extremely important because you must be facing Mecca when praying. To figure this out, one must use a map and compass or a GPS system.

Why did you choose this image? How does the image represent the pillar?
This image shows a man giving alms to a poorer person. This represents how the Muslims who could pay paid alms, which was then given to the poor.
Why is the practice of this pillar important to Islam?
This is important to Islam because it gives the poorer people a chance to succeed financially. It promotes equality between all social classes.
How might the practice of giving alms encourage achievements in mathematics/finance and promote a sense of community?
First off it allows people who don't have a lot of money to receive it, boosting economics. In addition, it forces people to learn basic taxes to see if they could pay the tax, improving societal knowledge of math and finance. Lastly, people build community and friendships between the rich and the poor.

Why did you choose this image? How does the image represent the pillar?
This is an image of an empty plate, which from sunup to sundown, is what Muslims see during the month of Ramadan, a month of fasting.
Why is the practice of this pillar important to Islam?
This is important to Islam because it gives them time to thank Allah and ask for forgiveness for their sins.
Ramadan only occurs once a year and is based on a lunar calendar, how might this encourage innovations?
Ramadan could encourage innovations because people would spend less time focusing on eating and more time focusing on just trying to make it through the day. That free time could allow them to create new ideas and innovation.

Why did you choose this image? How does the image represent the pillar?
This is an image of Mecca, the city where most Muslims try to make the journey to at least once in their life, if not annually.
Why is the practice of this pillar important to Islam?
This is one of the most important pillars because it gives people a more physical commitment to prayer. It also creates a sense of equality because everybody is dressed in the same clothing and doing the same prayers.
Hajj only happens in Mecca; what would somebody back then (before 1500) need in order to get to Mecca and participate in Hajj?
Back in 1500, you would need either extreme determination to get to Mecca or a lot of money, which I think is ironic because the whole point was to make the Muslim people more equal.
