What is Energy?

Energy does not have just one definition. It depends on who you ask but you will always get a different from each person. According to the law of conservation, energy can not be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed. It can come in the form of potential energy, an example is gravitational energy. It can also come in the form of kinetic energy, an example of mechanical energy. Thermal energy is third and is usually generated by friction affecting the other types of energy. Energy can be transferred as well, according to the earlier mentioned, law of conservation.

How does a roller coaster demonstrates energy and the law of energy?

In the roller coaster project, energy gets transferred to a different type of energy. Gravitational potential energy could change into mechanical kinetic energy and thermal energy could change into gravitational potential energy. As the roller coaster went up the hill, it was potential energy and when it went down the hill, it changed into kinetic and slowly started to change into thermal energy. The process continued with every hill, the thermal energy gradually increasing.

The height of the first hill was chosen due to the exact amount of kinetic energy that would be as it went down the hill. I made a certain amount of hills and made them small so they wouldn’t generate a lot of potential energy but enough potential energy. The end of the track had to generate a specific amount of potential energy so it could stop in the right spot, I made it higher than the hills. The number of cars was chosen because I wanted to generate the highest possible amount of potential energy possible. If you click below, you can see exactly how the roller coaster went.
