For my senior trip and 18th birthday, my parents decided to take me on a surprise trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Ever since I was little, I loved anything to do with the water. I loved swimming, canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, etc.
Since I loved the water, it was natural for me to spend all of my time by the beach.
I remember swimming out into the ocean, by myself, admiring the coral. Eventually, I swam far enough from the shore and encountered an area that didn't contain any coral. I took a moment in this clearing to look up from the bottom of the ocean floor, to be greeted by multiple sea turtles!

Has there ever been a time when you encountered an animal in its natural habitat?

Also, while in Riviera Maya, I was given the opportunity to swim with dolphins!
The resort had many different interactions, such as swimming with dolphins, renting jet skis, kayaking, etc.
I remember being allowed to talk to the dolphins and slash them with water. I even got to ride on one!
I was in a group of three other people, but my time with the dolphins was definitely worth it!

What was your favorite vacation activity?

Watch out for the fire coral!!

This is another story about my adventures in Riviera Maya, but this isn't so much of a happy memory.
I look back now and laugh, but during the moment it was far from funny!
While snorkeling in the ocean, I not only came across a family of sea turtles but also a family of string rays. As I was making my way back to the shore where my things were located, the waves started to become more violent.
Then the waves began to push me closer to the shore, even though I wasn't near my stuff.
Before I knew it, the waves had pushed me into about three feet of water, with coral directly under me. Technically, you shouldn't touch or step on the coral, being that some of it is endangered and dangerous. But the water continued to push me and I was unable to move.
My body began to scrap the top of the coral. I blew all the air out of my lungs and sucked my stomach in. I laid as flat as I could, but it wasn't enough. And all of a sudden I was laying on top of a pile of coral. My skin began to burn and turn bright red. Not wanting to destroy the coral, I continued to try to swim away, but eventually gave up and stood up on top of the coral. Once I stood up, I looked down and noticed I was in less than two feet of water. I had burns all over my body. It has turned out that I was stung by coral known as fire coral.

Is there a time when you got hurt by a plant or animal?

My boyfriend is currently deployed in the Navy. Prior to him leaving for his deployment, I went to San Diego to visit him.
During my trip, we took multiple trips to Mission Beach.
Both of us were determined to find seashells to take home with us as a memory of our trip, but we were unable to find any. The most we found were broken and crushed pieces. Upon giving up, we began to walk back to our things from the water. I just so happened to be looking down when I found something white in the sand. I bend down to pick it up, and it turns out to be a full sand dollar!
It definitely made up for the lack of seashells.

Do you have a story about you and a beach?

I am OBSESSED with pickles. Growing up, my brother and I would drink the juice from the pickle jar.
One day, in kindergarten, the cafeteria served hamburgers for lunch. Each burger came with lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. I asked everyone in the cafeteria if I could have their pickles. I probably ate the whole classes lunch that day. Upon going back to class, our teacher would let us stop by the water fountain for drinks after recess and lunch. I drank some water and sat down on the classroom carpet. Before I know it, I had thrown up on the spot in front of me. I can only assume now that it was from the mixture of pickles, water, and exhaustion from recess.
I still eat pickles to this day!

Has there ever been a time when your favorite food made you sick?

Exactly a year ago, my first car was totaled.
I was driving back to Greeley from my home town. It was beginning to snow, and visibility became low.
I began to have tunnel vision from the snow fall, and started to decelerate. I squinted at the space above me, swearing I could see the back end of a semi-truck. And so I thought to myself, maybe the tunnel vision was from the back end of a semi-truck? And as I fixate my eyes in front of me, I take a quick glance in my rear view mirror. And that's when I noticed two headlights approaching the back end of my car, and quickly.
The headlights that I saw in my mirror made contact with the back end of my car, pushing me 100 feet from the road.

Tell a story of you and a car.

Skiing down the mountain... more like falling down the mountain

Every year, my dad and I try to reserve one day when the two of us can go skiing. I haven't always been the best skier, and I remember the first time my dad tried to teach me how to ski. And I would like to emphasize the word TRIED in that sentence.
Before getting on the lift and skiing down the mountain, my dad decided he would teach me some of the basic on a hill next to the lift ticket stand. My dad explains that in order to go down, you point your skis straight. So, I point my skis straight. Unfortunately, my dad didn't teach me how to stop. I began to pick up speed. As I'm going down the small hill, a family walks out in front of me. I yell at them and say "watch out! I don't know how to stop". And as they shuffle out of my way, I hit the lift ticket stand's wall straight on. I guess I figured out how to stop!

What's an event that involved you and the mountains?

Like I previously said, I love water activities.
My mom is from Indiana, so my family and I would frequently take summer road trips from Colorado to Indiana. One summer, we passed through Illinois and decided to go kayaking. My mom chose a single kayak, but my dad and I decided to share one. As we are paddling down the river, my dad notices a curved tree branch. The branch makes an arch, and he suggests it would be fun if we paddled under. Of course, we start to paddle towards it while my mom keeps her distance. As we make our way under the tree branch arch, my dad's head scraps the top of it. This pushes his Oakley sunglasses into the water. Without thinking, he jumps into the freezing water to chase after them.
As he jumps out, his body weight causes the kayak to flip. Sending me, our paddles, shoes, etc. into the water. My mom begins to row down stream to collect our items. But unfortunately, she was only about to retrieve one of my flip flops.
I walked back to the car, on a gravel, with only one shoe.

Tell a story about your parent's doing more harm than good ;)

The summer after graduation I had gone to Target to pick out a dress for my birthday. I had brought my phone and my keys, which also had my wallet attached to it.
Needing some fashion advice, I called my boyfriend. I put my keys/wallet on the shelf in front of me and propped my phone up so my boyfriend could see the dress. Excited about the dress, I rushed to the check-out stand. Once my items were scanned I realized I didn't have my wallet. I rushed back to where I had made the phone call, hoping that the wallet and keys were still there. Unfortunately, they were gone.
I had lost my graduation money, which was over $500, my drivers license, insurance card, car keys, and many more.
My boyfriend and I had spent over three hours looking for my wallet inside the target, hoping someone stole the cash and ditched everything else in a different isle. But we had no luck.
Every once in a while my boyfriend says, "I wonder if go back to that Target if it will be there". It makes me laugh now, but it definitely wasn't funny in the moment.

Have you ever lost your wallet or keys?
