COGNITIVE THEORY (LILY BOWLER)

Self-efficacy is a concept of the Cognitive Theory, which is when the learner (or in this case, Kevin) puts learnt behaviours into practice. This is shown particularly through Kevin's hobby of archery, which his father introduced him to during his adolescence. Initially, he wasn’t very good at archery, however, he does become much better as the audience learns that Kevin is a very persistent individual. Throughout the film, the audience can see this passion for the support grow out of control, to the point where he intentionally injuries fellow students at his school with a bow and arrow and then later murders his father and sister using the same piece of equipment in spite of his mother.

SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY (MEGAN PAYNE)

According to Wyatt etal “Bandara stated that behaviour is learned and role models are therefore essentially important.” This can be role play when children copy their parents or role models. For example when the child copies the mother by using the makeup brushes like her. The behaviour could be positive and be encourage by rewarding the behaviour. However this behaviour can be negative so the parent will change it or stop the behaviour. Children will copy their role models. Which children have a few role models and we copy their behaviour. Health and social care should be good role models for the individuals. An example of this is the language of the health and social care worker language. This includes the type of language while speaking to the children or even other staff. This help the children behaviour because if the individual is punished for bad behaviour he/she will know it’s wrong. This theory suggest that Kevin because his mother was not a good role model. His mother was quite distance to him since he was born. So this could mean that Kevin dose not know how to connect with people and opting his mother. Also when Kevin was a child his mother pushed him. This could be where Kevin got his violence from. This suggest that Kevin was copying his mother with the violence from other people. His action might have be caused by his mother because he was copying his role model. This implies that Kevin knew it was wrong but he could of got away with it just like his mother did. Also when Kevin was a child he did not get punished so he did not know what is right and wrong. This means that Kevin did not learn what right so this suggest his actions.

This theory links with Kevin at the belongingness and love needs stage. This is due to the fact that Kevin and his mother didn’t have that connection from birth. So as Kevin didn’t get this connection, for him it created a bad relationship for them both. This could then lead onto esteem issues as he may not feel acceptance and that could potentially change the way he sees things. Also Kevin wouldn’t be able to reach his full personal growth after what he did so from not having that connection at birth had a major impact on him.

Erickson believes that a child's personality is based on their previous life stage. This theory is called epigenetic principle. During infancy, Kevin's mother did not breastfeed him or try to bond with him. This could have affected Kevin's development as he did not bond with his mother he may have found it hard to bond with other individuals.
