type of cyber attack that targets the three-way handshake process in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) communication protocol. In a SYN flood attack, the attacker sends a large number of SYN (synchronize) packets to the target system, overwhelming its resources and causing it to become unresponsive to legitimate requests.

In a normal TCP connection, the three-way handshake involves the client sending a SYN packet to the server, the server responding with a SYN-ACK (synchronize-acknowledge) packet, and the client sending an ACK (acknowledge) packet to complete the connection. However, in a SYN flood attack, the attacker sends a high volume of SYN packets without completing the handshake process. This causes the target system to allocate resources for each incoming SYN packet, eventually depleting its resources and leading to a denial of service (DoS) or distributed denial of service (DDoS) condition.
