What I knew about sculpture before taking the module

Before the Module on sculpture, I already knew what was considered beautiful, due to the previous module. But, other than that, I knew that sculptures were physical 3d objects that either represented something or was an abstraction. I knew how statues were sometimes statements or reminders of some event or some idea. Statues were more than just the materials used to make them.

What I learned in the module about the form of sculpture as a Fine Art

During the Module, I learned about the various sculpting styles throughout the eras. We first learned about how the Greeks made their sculptures. It was interesting to me that they had three distinctive sculptural styles during their cultural dominance. The Archaic style can be seen as the proto-Greek stage, as the greeks were still colonizing and being inspired by their surroundings. Egyptian influences could be seen in this style. The Hellenic style is also known as the classical style, as it sets the new bar for the forming and creation of statues. Two of its defining characteristics are its idealized human form and the expressionlessness of the statues. The last Greek style is the Hellenistic style. It is called the Hellenistic style because it formed after the death of Alexander the Great, who Hellenized majority of the known world at the time. Its most defining characteristic is the emotion that is captured in the statues created during this time period. The Second set of sculptures we learned about were from the Romans. Now, the Romans had stolen many techniques from the greeks, however they have made their own styles for statues. The romans had less use for beauty in their art, and this reflects in their sculptures. Their main usage of sculptures was for propaganda and moral boosting purposes, and as such were more personal than idealized.
