Cory talks with Troy, his father, about race in baseball. They argue about Cory's future playing college football for a predominantly white team. Then Troy refused to sign his recruitment papers because Cory should keep his job in the market and his father does not want his son to be subjected to unequal treatment. Having a steady job would be more beneficial than him being on the team and disrespected by white men. Cory asks why his father does not like him, but his father replies by putting him in his place and explaining how he acts out of love for his son. Troy sends Cory back to A&P, and Rose enters asking Troy why Cory cannot just play football and how Cory just wants to be like his dad with sports. Troy disagrees because he does not want his son to be like him.

Baseball is symbol of American Dream and Freedom, so the fact that Cory could not play symbolically meant that he did not have any freedom. Troy uses baseball terms like "strike out" in reference to life teachings because that meant failure in baseball and in life. This scene references a lot to baseball in context to racial inequality, using the late integration of black people into sports teams as a symbol for the overarching lack of progression in society.

Relation to Meaning of Story

This scene shows the division between generations of African Americans. Throughout the story, sports are used as a way to emphasize the change in society towards equality, which many, like Troy, still are not satisfied with. The quote below powerfully explains As times change and the world becomes a more accepting place, older African Americans stay left in the remnants of missed opportunity. Troy remains bitter about not being accepted as a black man into football even though he was better than many of the white players. Now he doesn't want his son to be treated the same way. Even though society appears to be moving towards equality of race, black people still need to work twice as hard to get to the same place as white people start.

The beginning of the scene is full of historical allusions to the "Negro leagues" and old baseball players. Examples include "that Puerto Rican boy" named "Clemente" on the Pirates, "Hank Aaron and Wes Covington" on the Braves, and "Satchel Paige" from the "Negro Leagues" (212-213). All of these allusions provide context and make the characters more relatable. The allusions are much like a common conversation one might hear today, but

Throughout the entire play, Wilson wrote in a way that captures how the characters would actually speak, which relates to the strong language because it adds to the casual yet emotionally changed tone. Wilson uses words like "ain't" and "yessir" to mimic the southern word of mouth and allow the scene to meet with real life. Colloquialisms help reality meet the story so that readers can more closely relate.

The literary devices combine to make a lively interaction between father and son. Historical allusions give context to Tory's frustration. Everyday of his life, he has given all he has, first to sports, then to his family, only to be exhausted at the end of the day. The colloquialisms in the speech mix with cacophonous language of swearing and references to actual baseball stars to simulate an actual mostly casual conversation between family in a dispute. Images and repetition depict and expand on the allusions' context of Troy's frustration
