1) I love how the Poet addresses the various stereotypes and restrictions placed on women and young girls. I absolutely adore how the poet shows the restrictions to be the hurdle that she has to pass before she can be her, own true, self.
2) I do think the technique of asking questions is one that is very interesting and very effective for the issue that is being dicussed. I do feel that this provokes thinking in the reader, which I strongly believe is the best outcome for this poem to achieve as poeple should start questioniong as to why these rules and restrictions were put in place in the first place.

-Andrea.R

I like that this poem addresses how overwhelming it is to be in Singapore sometimes, with the competitiveness and all the emphasis on succeeding the conventional way. It’s really a sad thing because they’re right, sometimes, if we don’t know how to run, we don’t know how to move at all and we’re left behind. This also reminds me of the scene in Off Centre where Vinod tells Saloma about his status as a mentally ill rat who has only been taught to run and therefore never learnt to walk. I believe the accusatory tone and the usage of “you” really suits the poem.

This poem speaks on the issue of bullying related to race, and it really brings out how sensitive the topic is for some and that while time may past, the harassment might have already manifested in years of self-doubt and therefore, no matter how guilty the perpetrator may feel, the scars have already been made. I like that it does not sugarcoat that aspect of bullying and makes its readers reflect on the racial slurs they may have carelessly said.

I do think that it is a very creative way to show what the poem is talking about, as the poem's titles usually gives the readers a glimpse as to what is being discussed.

2) I especially love the various metaphors used to convey the message, for example, " My hearts melt like diary milk, the same shade as my skin". This quote illustrates the poet's skin color. There are various instances in which the poet employs literary devices, and i do find that quite admirable!

-Andrea.R

1) I love the Poem's overall message! Its absolutely ingenius of the poet to link metamorphosis to a rat race. I also love the Poem's name, as it is very intriguing, and is also quite insightful as to what the poet is going to talk about in the poem.

2) The poem makes a clear reference to Singapore's education system, and how children seem to lose their innocence as they lose theri "bright smiles". I really do find it quite commendable, as the Poet is addressing problems and getting to the heart of the problem by emphasising how the whole problem began. The poet is calling out the whole system. Moreover, the poet calling the whole system is very powerful, as a rat race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit. The phrase equates humans to rats attempting to earn a reward such as cheese, in vain, And in this poem, it is addressing how Singaporean students chase after good grades and "success" blindly.

-Andrea.R

i loved the use of french in the title to give us a glimpse into the overarching theme of the poem.the metaphor of the dairy milk chocolate was really powerful as that's something i relate to as well. the other metaphors are equally powerful. the persona's realisation of what a society he/she lives in comes across beautifully in the poem.

really love the imagery and metaphors given in the poem which strikingly conveys the pain you've felt since such a young age :( definitely is a reminder to racist bullies in Singapore that race does not define our intellectual abilities

- victoria

highlights the limitations of what being a girl feels like and what we are stopped from doing solely because of our gender. the ellipsis highlights uncertainty because of the comments from people around us and that's something really powerful in this poem :)
- victoria

i like how the writer has a repetition of the word 'want' as it puts an emphasis on what you want to put across. furthermore, it is a strong word as it shows that the writer is very persistent about her/his beliefs. however i feel like the poem is very repetitive so i think you could elaborate on your point more :)

i enjoyed reading this poem as the writer has written it at in way where we will fully emphasize with what she has gone through. there is also a hint of how she doesnt really care about the negativity around her by using the word 'just'.

it is very interesting how the writer shows how the domino effect will bring negativity towards everyone. the last stanza really made me realize how the last one in the domino will have to take in the most impact. the fact that the last one will have to absorb all the impact that is being put. an also how the last one has no one to rely to and i can infer that the last one is the one who wants to make a change.

i love how the poem exposes how the singapore education system is. having the top education comes with a cost and that is our happiness. how us singaporean students have questionable morals as we are forced to put our success in education before anything else
