For me it engages me by describing the girl as 'pretty and charming girls'. Also it is interesting that the writer doesn't tell us who the girl is which engages us to find out who she is.

DISCUSS THE ENDING
In the end there is conflict between Mme Loisel and Mme Forestier. The ending was not what we expected as the diamond necklace was fake and it took her ten years to pay for a real diamond necklace and that she had a horrible ten years trying to pay for the neckalace. In my opinion we should feel sorry for her because Madame Forestier didn't tell Mathilde that it was fake.

beginningThe opening engages you by describing the the girl but not saying who she is this makes the reader want to read on and find out. Also the junxtaposition between what the girl acts like and is capable of and her situation and station in life makes the reader sympathise with her and want to find out what will happen to her.

DISCUSS THE ENDING

The ending was shocking as through out the peice you see the hardships the Loisels went through because of one careless mistake, when she lost the necklace, and then a bombshell is dropped on the reader, ' it was fake' the ending also makes the reader feel extremely bad for Mme louisle as her whole life was wasted trying to free herself from a thirty-six thousand franc debt when it was only five hundred.

WHO IS THE PROTAGONIST, WHAT DO WE LEARN ABOUT THEM IN THE BEGINING

Madam Louisle (or mathilde) is the protagonist. In the beginning we learn that she was born to a working / middle class family despite the fact that she would have been better suited to an upper class family due to her prettiness and charm. She had ' no way of becoming well-known' nor respectable.

WHAT TYPES OF CONFLICT ARE IN THE TEXT

We discussed that the ending was fairly anti-climatic. It should have been more of an important event and should have meant more. There could have been athother scene where Madame louisele should have been invited into the foristiers family and been taken in. They could have rebuilded the louisele's lives. It was fairly ironic because they spent their lives paying for a necklace that ended up being fake.

We discussed that the ending gives us a mood of sadness and relief, because of how we learn that Mathilde has finally gathered enough money to pay for another necklace in order to replace the fake one. But, as we discover in the end, Madame Forestier reveals that the necklace was in fact a fake, and only had a value of 500 franks, so we feel sadness as Mathilde has worked incredibly hard in order to repay her debts, thus having a miserable 10 years. This means that, unfortunately, all of Mathilde's work and struggle was in vain. -giles

The discussion between our group helped to represent that we shared similar views. We all agreed that the ending was a little anticlimactic. This was because lots of suspense was created throughout the story which then led to our dismay as we sympathised for Madame Loisel.

However we thought that the ending was quite sad as the Madame Loisel has spent her whole life trying to get back this jewellery despite the fact the fact she was given a fake.

Then she has to persuade her husband to spend his savings on a ball gown for her . Lastly she has to buy a new necklace and pay back debt for the next 10 years and to eventually find out it was a fake .
