Our poster analyzes the Real ID Act that passed in 2005 after the tragedy of 9/11. This policy attempted to solve the social problem of Americans lacking secure identification. The policy encouraged states to upgrade the security features on their driver's license, essentially making those documents a national identity card.

When implementing this policy, many homeless individuals suffered.

Scope~A total of 10.7% of clients lacked photo identification. Many of the providers indicated that they require an ID to access their services, including emergency shelters and food pantries.

Social Consequence~No vital documents means no ID. No ID means no governmental aid, employment opportunities, housing opportunities, and sometimes no emergency shelters. Homeless individuals get harassed by the police for not having any form of identification.

Major Causes~
1. Money
2. Difficult to provide legal documents (lost, fire, moved)
3. Transportation
