- 2001: (April 30) The second section of busway between Woolloongabba and Eight Mile Plains opened. 
- 2009: Metroad 3 decommissioned, route renumbered M3 for motorway standard / limited access sections and A3 for suburban arterial road sections.

Why was it built?
-Brisbane was urbanizing not only in the central city but out towards the outer suburb and local authorities land.
-Changed the emphasis in transport planning: from moving vehicles to moving people.

-While student accommodations are building with less family-like households, it increases the separation between different social classes. Those with high SES tend to live in luxurious student accommodations or apartment where everything are well-prepared and accessible with money for example laundry or cleaning services. On the other hand, those with lower SES would have to move out because could not afford the urbanization that caused prices to increase. Others would become homeless and live beside the streets.

-My experience: I would often see people sleeping under the bridge during the nights, opening music with pieces of broken beer bottles scattered on the floor. 

-Those with high SES would be more collectivistic since they have time and money to go out and meet friends and socialize with others, while those with low SES are more individualistic as they have to work for longer hours to get more money, and have to make meals which would require more time and therefore have less time to go outside to socialize with others.

This lead to the renewal of the antiques and restaurant precincts.

Calligeros (2010), the columnist from the Brisbane times, interviewed some Woolloongabba residents and concluded that
“Some residents fear this model development signaled an apocalypse for the unique character of the eclectic suburb” (Calligeros,2010).
Here are some of the opinions from the interview.

David Murray, an architect and resident who has been living in Woolloongabba for 33 years, feared that the characteristics and the charm of the suburb such as sleepy back streets, and light industry would be demolished or “disappear in the shadows of high rises”.
  • This fear of the disappearance of the suburb’s unique character reflects Jane Jacobs( who had an influence on urban studies in the 20th century in which she disagreed with the proposed project of building an expressway that will overhaul her neighborhood.) position of preservationists. It could be that there some sense in the building that makes people feel that they are connected in time through being surrounded by the building environment since the past. This could be explained the concept called "place attachment" that may 
    • “come simply with familiarity and ease, with the assurance of nurture and security, with the memory of sounds and smells, of communal activities and homely pleasures accumulated over time’’ (Tuan 1977, as cited in Trentelman (2009), 159). 
Another opinion is from the Mother-of-two Tash Bowe.
  • "I can see many organizations getting those apartments and turning them into housing commission," "These sorts of developments are not considerate to tenants of a certain socio-economic background. They do not adequately support them,” "If you end up with a lower socioeconomic base then you have the problems that come with that - crime increases, the drugs, and prostitution will increase - and it's already in a ridiculous state at the moment in Kangaroo Point, "  
    • This concern regarding the potential socioeconomic and crime rate problems are in line with Jane Jacobs’s focus of the micro-level of the city where people’s need and well-being are prioritized.  
On the other hand, these residents' opinions are not extreme on the side of preservationist (see below). They have no problem with the urbanization, but it should be done within an appropriate boundary. This indicates that they still want to promote the growth of the suburb for the greater good in which this point of view is similar to that of Robert Moses's.
  • Both Ms Tash and Mr David believed that residential and commercial buildings should be limited to three or five stories.
  • Local councilor Helen Abrahams said she was "not opposed to the proposed high-rises, as long as they were built close to the motorway, far away from the back streets of tin and timber houses” .

This quote very well describes the current situation of Woolloongabba's development.
      Real estate agents exploit utility of the space in Woolloongabba as reflected by the fact that houses in the district are being demolished and turned into student accommodations and high-rise apartment. An advantage of it is that it may increase diversity and complexity of the relationships of people coming the area, as the number of new residents increases.

Although it is true that people are physically closer when an area becomes denser, they are more socially distant (Wirth, 1938). This can cause social displacement. That is, people who had been living in the area migrate out, while newcomers, who has little attachment to the area, migrate in. This can lead to low involvement in the community, more individualistic society, instability within the population (newcomers, who have stayed for a while, willing to emigrate as a result of superficial bond within and low attachment to the society). Crime rate may increase as people become more anonymous.

All in all, I think it is important to not overpopulate the district. An appropriate degree of urbanization can be beneficial (e.g. the interviewee's opinion on developing Woolloongabba). The balance between ruralism and urbanism should be set rather than urbanizing the area altogether.
