The EchoNous is a new innovation that has recently gained FDA approval for use in emergency settings. This device is aimed at improving peripheral intravenous (PIV) insertion. In the Emergency Room, when minutes matter, it is imperative that PIVs are placed in a timely manner in order to infuse life-saving medications and fluids or blood products. Many patients are considered "hard-sticks" meaning the traditional way of obtaining a PIV does not work. The EchoNous is a way to avoid wasting precious time by being able to accurately start a PIV the first time. Nurses would use this ultrasound-guided technology to find a vein up to 5 cm in depth in a patient's arm, and then introduce the catheter while visualizing the vein on the screen.

Being an Emergency Room nurse, I see the struggles of obtaining a PIV on a critically ill "crashing" patient almost every single day. While this technology is promising, it comes with some degree of challenges; Mainly the challenge of training all staff to properly use the device, and being comfortable with it. Currently, the SonoSite is in use in many ERs, with only a fraction of the staff competent in its use. If this new innovation comes with a more in depth training experience, I believe it will significantly increase patient outcomes.
