While they did not earn wages, they did have shelter, food, and rights as a citizen. Most were offered land and an opportunity at employment once their service term was complete. 

It was very expensive to travel to the Colonies. Many people chose to sign an indentured contract in order to have a chance at land and a new life.

Many of the indentured servants did not survive the first few years due to the illnesses and diseases of the new land.
