History of Wolves - I think that alongside the major unfolding storyline dealing with the health of the child, the book raises many issues linked to concepts of identity.

Madeline/Linda isn't sure if the people she knows as her mum and dad are really her parents. Again, she's unsure of who she is. Was she just left behind when the commune she was initially raised in fell apart? Her mother obsessively baptises her - a weird experience surely, and neither parent seems to give her the unconditional love she craves. The book demonstrates the damage disruption to attachments brings with it. Linda initially develops multiple attachments with those in the commune, but these are broken, and she has passed the critical period when a single, monotropic attachment might develop. This means that the model she carries in her head about how people relate to, and love each other, has become confused.

Linda's emerging sexuality also plays a significant role, again tinged with confusion. Lily appears to be something of a fixation, Mr Grierson is potentially exciting for her and her love/need for Patra is made obvious when she tells how she likes being close to her.

Concepts of power are significant, particularly the power of men. The patriarchal nature of so many religions, although Mary Baker Eddy was important in the development of Christian Science, is demonstrated in the power of Patra's husband in manipulating the situation with regard to Paul's illness. It's interesting to note, that in this case, although Linda felt others believed she judged them, she made no attempt to judge Patra and her husband, merely accepted their approach. Why? Also we might consider why Patra didn't assert herself?
