In the movie ' Twelve Angry Men' and the Novel 'Montana 1948' we see how personal prejudice has an influence on the ability to find the truth and uphold the law. In the film "Twelve Angry Men', Juror 8 is faced with the difficulty upholding a fair trial despite the personal prejudice that was shown by the rest of the Jurors. After Juror 8 voted not guilty there was an uproar between the rest of the jurors because they did not care enough about the injustice of the trial, that the boy from the slums was faced with. Through-out the discussion jurors were slowly beginning to realise that their prejudice thoughts was clouding their judgement. In the film we see Juror 3 basing his decisions on the young boys guilt in the trial based on his own challenging relationship with his son. In the text 'Montana 1948' Mary Little solider was sexually assaulted by Frank, she admitted it to Gail whom spoke to Wes who is the county sheriff and her husband. Wes said Mary Little solider has no idea about what she is talking about and is probably terrified because she has not been through a medical procedure. He’s personal prejudice to indians is that they’re lazy ...

Furthermore, decisions made by characters in both texts are influenced by both social and external forms of racism and prejudice. The setting and general time frame of each text both contribute to the influence of prejudice on decisions. In Montana 1948, the text is set in “The Wild West”, in an isolated town in Mercer County. The entire town is small enough, where the Hayden family, and its tradition, is very well known. Conversely, Twelve Angry Men is set in a secluded jury room, in a court house, in the busy city of New York. This setting is drastically different to the town of Bentrock, however the idea of a isolated setting is similar in both texts. In Twelve Angry Men, the jurors are locked in the small room, evident by the quote, “I never knew they locked the door. Of course they lock the door, what do you think?”, Jurors 5 and 10 respectively. This shows an idea of isolation, in which, the jury is isolated from the rest of the city, until they reach a verdict. Similarly, in Montana 1948, the town is isolated from the rest of the country, with a population of less than 2000 people. The town itself is incredibly small in geographical size, as stated by David, “I could be out in minutes, whether I walked, biked, ran, or followed the railroad tracks just on the other side of our backyard.” We can see from David’s description of his hometown, just how isolated Montana is, which ultimately contributes as an external factor to influenced decisions. We can also see how social conformity also brings out prejudice in characters between both texts. In Twelve Angry Men, certain jury members like jurors 6, 7 and 12 are easily swayed by others comments of the boy on trial, which may be a result of them feeling to need to conform to the others side. This is most evident when juror 7 changes his vote because he wants the discussion to end, and he thinks that joining the ‘Not Guilty’ side of the group will assist that, “Listen, I'll tell you something. I'm a little sick of this whole thing already. We're getting nowhere fast. Let's break it up and go home. I'm changing my vote to not guilty.” Group conformity can be considered a social factor that could ultimately change the decisions made by characters in both texts. In Montana 1948, its considered a social norm, or belief, to dislike the American Indians of the town, with the exception of Ollie Young Bear, to which Wes says, “He’s a testament to what hard work will get you”. Other than Ollie however, all other Indians of the town are held in a low regard. This is questioned when Wes doubts Marie’s accusations, strictly because of her race.

"She's an Indian- why would she tell the truth?”. Despite social and external forms of prejudice and racism influencing decisions, characters in both texts are eventually able to overcome both personal and external forms of prejudice, to obtain a just outcome.

Paragraph 3 The Characters of both texts display prejudices in both personal and external ways. In 'Montana 1948', the main prejudice can be seen predominately in the Hayden family, and the outside community. Wes Hayden, the town sheriff, and Franks brother, was torn between upholding the law and family loyalty while trying to come to conclusions, influenced by prejudice. It is shown when Gail realises the prejudice in the family and tries to dictate the outcome of the case. On the other hand, compared to 'Montana 1948', the twelve angry jurors had no contact with external factors and simply judged the case based on personal prejudice and experiences. Eleven out of twelve jurors, without actual evidence, surely decided the death sentence for the boy. After several heated hours, juror 10 had a racist explosion which allowed the other 11 jurors to realise their personal prejudice and how that impacted their original decision that the boy was guilty. Both texts, 'Montana 1948' and 'Twelve Angry Men', display personal prejudice in different ways, but overcome these as they realise it affected their judgement about the truth.

Characters in both ‘Montana 1948’ and ‘Twelve Angry Men’ undergo the difficult choices of deciding between what is just and lawfully right without the influence of prejudice and racism. In 'Twelve Angry Men,' all Jurors with the exception of Juror 8 were quick to dismiss the evidence supporting the young boy due to his background, ethnicity and the area he was brought up in. Juror 8 admits that, “It’s always difficult to keep personal prejudice out of a thing like this” while witnessing the judgements of the other jurors who say that he’s a “…liar” and he’s “…no good.” Similarly, in 'Montana 1948,' the town people's views on the Indians obscure their decisions towards the death of Marie Little Soldier. It created an uproar in the community because previous incidents with native Americans were ignored and for the first time, mistreatment towards them were brought to light and were forced to be dealt with. Additionally, due to Julian's prejudices and personal bias', he refuses to believe the wrongdoings of his son, Frank and ignores the claims of others. Although prejudice and racism influenced significant choices throughout ‘Montana 1948’ and ‘Twelve angry Men’, the characters (Jurors) were able to overcome prejudice and bias’ after realising that their own prejudices influenced their unjust decisions. Conversely, prejudice did not have the same concluding impact on the characters in ‘Montana 1948’, as they were not able to reach a just and fair decision, due to Frank committing suicide before his trial.
