Years and Years - Take Shelter

The subject matter of this song defines how the singer wants to see someone but knows it is bad for him emotionally. It is an emotional pathway about how he is at war with himself in seeing this person "Do what you want tonight, it's alright if you want to get used" as well as "To keep myself apart from you". The song is by a male artist (Olly Alexander) yet the sounds that are heard in the background and production of the tune is by the whole band (Years & Years), who are an alternative electronic trio. Olly's voice is very soothing and soulful and the song has a very mellow and peaceful tempo to it that is relaxing, with a steady beat that sometimes seems mystical and hypnotic. For a music video for this song, I could easily play with lighting and have lots of atmospheric moods to the slow-pace song with colours and mixtures between low and high-key lighting. There could be a couple in a bedroom and taking walks etc. that tells a love story, I would have a lot of slow motion involved to fit the pace of the song as well as some performance from the 'artist' and some dance perhaps. However, this could potentially lead to quite a repetitive and boring video that lacks in narrative and meaning.

The subject matter of this song is about a weird man who can't get a job and becomes odder as he spends more and more time alone. Dave Bayley explained the lyrics describe, "a guy who was born a bit strange, and struggles to become part of society. Because of that, he spends more time alone in his own head, getting stranger, and it becomes an awful cycle of doom." So for this video, I would have an abstract narrative illustrating various peoples' daily routines, with a performance from the band inside the narrative to develop a clear plotline that is obvious for the audience to follow alongside the lyrics. This may feel too much like a performance video however, which are not my intentions and I do not want too much lip-syncing involved as it is not overly conventional for my genre. The song is not upbeat or slow, it has a steady beat and a combination of sincere vocals, electronic and percussion sounds that illustrate the alternative sound. The lyrics "Come back down to my knees, Gotta get back, gotta get free" illustrate a wide subject that I could explore through mise-en-scene really creatively. For example lots of different locations that the people are found in throughout the course of a day.

Alt-j (∆) - Breezeblocks

The subject matter of this song is difficult, and it implies much more to think about than that of a clearly-narrated one with a simple message. The song is about liking someone who you want so much that you want to hurt yourself and them, as well, "hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks" and "my love my love love love". For a music video, I would have an abstract narrative that could be potentially difficult to follow yet would be a very interesting challenge to try and portray. There is a lot I could play with in lighting, as well as mise-en-scene and character display in different locations. I could portray a couple in the depths of a relationship, yet one person is so in love they want to kill the other to reflect the song. I would make sure I have a range of shots and locations to edit, as well as adding slow-motion to fit with the beginning and end tempo of the song. The style is alternative electronic, with Alt-j's beautiful voices over an intermittent and abstract beat in the chorus of the song. There are many moments where in my video, I could emphasise the change in beat/addition of new sounds in the track and sudden sounds like the "La La La La". There are lots of dramatic sounding elements, as well as a classical sound the I could emphasise through on-screen action.

I have decided to use Alt-j's 'Breezeblocks', for the track in my video. This is because a lot of the song has hidden meaning and depth to it that I can explore through lighting, editing and mise-en-scene creatively. Although this track does have an official video, it gives me scope for creating my own interpretation and imagination for the video when filming with genre conventions, yet also some existing imagery that I could refer to. This song has a unique style of alternative electronic added, including many changes in tempo as well as interchanging sounds, that I can use to experiment when developing my video.
