         <description><![CDATA[<ol start="2"><li><p><strong>Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)</strong></p></li></ol><p><strong>Definition of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)</strong> CCS is a technology designed to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from industrial sources and power plants by capturing CO₂, transporting it, and storing it underground in geological formations to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.</p><p><strong>Chemical Processes Involved in CCS</strong></p><p><strong>Capture:</strong> CO₂ is separated from other gases using methods such as absorption (chemical solvents like amines), adsorption (solid materials), membrane separation, or cryogenic distillation.</p><p><strong>Transport:</strong> Once captured, CO₂ is compressed into a supercritical fluid and transported through pipelines or ships to storage sites.</p><p><strong>Storage:</strong> The CO₂ is injected deep underground into rock formations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline formations, or basalt formations, where it can be mineralized over time.</p><p><strong>Effectiveness and Sustainability of CCS</strong></p><p><strong>Effectiveness:</strong> CCS can capture up to 90% of CO₂ emissions from power plants and industrial facilities, significantly reducing their carbon footprint.</p><p><strong>Sustainability:</strong> While CCS is a crucial tool for mitigating climate change, it is expensive and requires energy, which can reduce its overall efficiency. Additionally, long-term monitoring is necessary to ensure stored CO₂ does not leak.</p><p><strong>Challenges:</strong> High costs, energy-intensive processes, and the need for suitable geological storage sites limit widespread implementation. However, advancements in carbon mineralization and direct air capture could improve sustainability.</p>]]></description>
